My self-summary
In college, my best friend asked me my mission in life. I said, "to give life to beauty." I'd like to think I do that, especially in my writing, although keep in mind that my aesthetic is equal parts Pablo Neruda and Homer Simpson.

Like Homer, I drool over donuts while neglecting my duties at the nuclear reactor. But unlike our favorite Einstein incarnate, I excel at supporting others. I regularly share job (and romantic) opportunities with friends, and enthusiastically edit cover letters and grant proposals when asked. One friend, long single, married a woman to whom I purposely introduced her. When a friend's life stagnates, I encourage forward momentum. I want see people thrive, stretch their potential, and fulfill their mission in life.

I have an innate ability to form connections with people from different cultures, something that has opened many opportunities and defined my life. I have family – biological and honorary – all over the country and world. I have good friends who live in bamboo huts in jungle villages, drinking water from springs, and other good friends who live in comparative mansions, drinking water from bottles. Who's richer?

I've been humbled by many magical experiences I've had traveling the globe, including:
- beholding a manta ray swim beneath me in the Indian Ocean.
- being moved to tears in Angkor Wat upon hearing the music played by men who lost limbs to US landmines.
- being 'adopted' by a Zapotec woman in Oaxaca when my mother was very ill.

I open doors for other people. I revere elders. I write letters by hand. Was I born two centuries tardy?

I'm looking for a partner who is confident, kind, compassionate, curious, and on a clear trajectory in her life. Oh, and someone who almost always alliterates. If you know a a dirty joke or two, you got a triple word score.
What I’m doing with my life
My day job is writing for theatre, film and tv. But I *really* want to be a receptionist.

Joking aside, I'm very fortunate right now to be able to support myself by writing. It allows me to explore many worlds I wouldn't get to know otherwise -- the Texas-Mexico border, an urban rendition of Neverland, Donald Rumsfeld's vacation home. I'm grateful for my work.

Also, working on taking my life to the next level – professionally, artistically, physically, mentally, and in the kitchen.

Note: For those frightened by societally-induced preconceptions about writers, know that I am financially literate, and have opted for no debt in favor of a retirement account.

People always say my smile, but really, they're probably staring at my derriere.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Gabriel García Márquez inspired me to write my first novel. I think I'm going to title it 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.'

I watched Zombieland in rural Guatemala. And loved it. I also love films by David Lynch, Werner Herzog, Kim-Ki Duk and Chan-wook Park. I think Herzog should remake Zombieland. That would be truly sublime.

Janelle Monae tore it up at Davies Symphony Hall last spring.

My favorite place to go shopping is the horse auction in Kalona, Iowa.
