BOOKS: When I read, I am constantly cycling through a few books at
a time (I'm not sure if this is a function of boredom or
indecisiveness...). Right now I'm reading Detroit: An American
Autopsy, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The Death and Life
of Great American Cities, Robert Kennedy's memoirs, and Crime and
Punishment because I'm embarrassed that I've never read it.
Generally, I go for non-fiction, but I'm trying to push myself into
Some favorites: The Unbearable Lightness of Being,?The World
According to Garp (Irving), All the President's Men, certain David
Foster Wallace stories, some Gore Vidal books, and other works on
various histories (that last part I think is why some people will
affectionately [or so they tell me] label me, "dork").
I also want to start reading Paul Auster.
And that Judd Apatow collection of short stories/essays was pretty
MOVIES: JFK, Uncle Buck, Inglorious Bastards, A Few Good Men,
American Gangster, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, City of God, Fallen,
Boondock Saints, The Departed...
SHOWS: Louie, The Daily Show, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,
Curb, Seinfeld, Band of Brothers, The Wire, SNL (I'm talking like,
1990s early 2000s SNL),
MUSIC: Music is a serious love of mine and will always be very
important to me. I'm a jazz musician, and one of those people who
listens obsessively to a few albums at a time, then gets sort of
bored and moves on, but then a few months later inevitably goes
back. I'm also really into 90s hip-hop. Here's what I'm into now
and some of my favorites:
J Dilla, Robert Glasper, Brian Blade, ERIMAJ, Ari Hoenig, Marcus
Gilmore, A Tribe Called Quest, Vijay Iyer, M.I.A., Meshell
Ndegeocello, Bad Plus, Uffie (bonus points if you can handle
Uffie), Esperanza Spalding, Soulive, Joshua Redman, Kneebody,
Imogen Heap, Lauryn Hill, Wayne Shorter.
FOOD: There is nothing that beats a really thick sandwich made with
fresh ingredients on good bread..with avocado...and it's gotta be
pressed. Bagels. Tom-yum Soup. Falafel from Taim (without a doubt
the best falafel in the city. I will put so much money on that).
Anything made with truffle oil. Omelets. Korean BBQ. Smoothies.
Ribs. A good burger. There's way, way more.
