My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Ex-pat Australian, was living in Scotland, now living in Oxford!

Thinker, sometimes too much so.
Dreamer, sometimes too little so.

Lifelong learner,
Occasional creator.

Ambitious, but grounded.
Idealistic, but realistic.

Striving to be the best person I can in a world that tends to frown upon such things.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I am in scientific research and spend my days looking for my white whale. A figurative one that is: I am hoping that maybe I can make the discovery that will launch my career. If you are into science, particularly on the medical side of things, then there is no chance our first meeting will involve us staring shyly and blankly at each other.

That said, I like to have a wall between my professional and personal life. This can be difficult in academia, switiching off ones brain for the day causes all sorts of problems. But I am trying. I am coming out of a busy period, and am looking forward to meeting new people to share some new experiences with.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Time travel - at least i think I would be if it existed.

But more practical skills include:

Dragon slaying

Ok. Serious now.

Cooking - i love cooking food for friends and company. My quest for the perfect steak continues unabated. I think I am the only straight male under 40 who lists 'Saturday Kitchen' in their lists of favourite shows.

Memory - I kill at pub quizzes. When I was little I could multiply 6 digit numbers in my head, but now (sadly) my brain tends to remember discographies of obscure 70s and 80s bands, Nobel Prize winners, British Monarchs, and the foibles of Australia's Prime Ministers.

Arguing - Well, not exactly. But I do love me a good conversation on weighty heavy topics.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My funny voice. Compared to the beautiful lilts of all the British accents, my shabby Australian one sounds like it could strip paint from the walls. But if you can stand to hear it then you will probably find that I speak in whole sentences; complete with vowels, dipthongs and fricatives.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Boy, this section is massively out of date. I promise to update this soon!

Books: Slaughterhouse-Five, The Road, George RR Martin 's A Song of Ice and Fire, Cormac McCarthy (genius - absolute genius), China Mieville, Dan Simmons, David Mitchell, CJ Sansom, Ian McEwan (with whom I have a weird love/hate thing going on with.). Salman Rushdie, Carter Beats the Devil.

I read a lot of classics too. I am in something of a Francophilic phase at the moment with recent highlights including 'Madame Bovary' by Gustave Flaubert; 'Swann's Way' by Marcel Proust; 'The Flowers of Evil' by Charles Baudelaire.

Movies: Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, The Fountain, Fight Club, Adaptation, The Blues Brothers, The Third Man, Napoleon Dynamite. The Big Lebowski (The Dude Abides - anything by the Coen Brothers really)

TV: Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones, The Daily Show, House of Cards, Battlestar Galactica, The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Archer, The IT Crowd, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Mythbusters, Big Bang Theory, Parks and Recreation

Music: The Arcade Fire, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Muse, Mark Lanegan, Tom Waits, Queens of the Stone Age, Elbow. I also love movie soundtracks by Clint Mansell: Moon, The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream.

Food: Fish n' Chips - which totally contradicts the gastronomic aura I was hoping to project in the previous section.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
- Music: I am on a lifelong quest to create the perfect playlist. Something that straddles the line between old and new, fresh and cliché, and uplifting and maudlin.

- The interwebs: It's nice to have the global touchstone at my fingertips. Especially when there are people who like to film themselves getting hurt.

- Running. It is only a recently discovered love, but it is one of the best things I have taken up since moving here to the UK.

- My Macbook. In Steve I trust.

and two other things that ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS YOURS!!! Wow we should totally catch up!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How to be rich and successful with the minimum amount of effort. I also love thinking up plots for stories I probably won't write.

I also LOVE having songs stuck in my head. Go on! Put one there. I bet I can find a song that is stickier.

Being a scientist you might catch me (in a moment of weakness) with a distant look in my eye as I ponder a world of Ewald spheres, Laue Groups and how the uncertainty principle relates to the phase problem.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I once saw the Village People in concert.

This stunning revelation should indicate that I am a very open person, so the most private thing might be so scary that you will turn all grey and wrinkly like that girl from 'The Ring'.

I can assure you that my mind is not so warped.

No. No it's not.

You have a brain and are vaguely humanoid. In all honesty I just want to meet some great people. Do you think you're ace? Then I probably will too.
