I am idealistic, brainy, and political.

My Self-Summary

I'm a meteorologist in who just got out of graduate school at UC Davis. I'm looking for some sort of job right now involving climate or public policy. I'm idealistic but open-minded, heretical but religious, outgoing but introverted, and obviously confused. Oh, yeah, and I'm funny too, mostly with wit.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm the secretary for a non-profit organization that provides online wikis, and a major contributor to local wikis.

Right now I'm unemployed, but taking a couple of college classes. Still, I'm doing a pretty bad job of being an otaku, since I'm always involved in some project. When I'm not editing/programming the Davis Wiki, I'm doing remodeling work, lobbying politicians, playing role-playing games (not that kind, I mean like D&D), or preaching Discordianism.

You might also find some interesting stuff about me at my Davis Wiki page: http://daviswiki.org/The_Labster

I’m really good at

I'm really good at helping others. I've become a bit of a leader just because I really want to make the world a better place; I was the Legislative Chair for the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students. But I'm really at my best helping others succeed. I'm a good teacher, but in a lot of other ways I'm a generalist. I get involved in everything a little bit -- probably involved in too many things.

The first things people usually notice about me

My voice. I'm a tenor, and I've done a lot of singing. I wish I could play an instrument, too, since I can read music decently.

Of course, the other reason someone might notice my voice first is that I tend to be very outspoken. I ask and answer a lot of questions in class; I often speak my political views to the crowd. I can talk a lot, but I try to have a purpose to what I am saying.

Well, either that or my sideburns.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) The Wrinkle in Time series are probably my most enduring favorites, but I'm into Tony Hillerman for now. C.S. Lewis and John Steinbeck are also pretty good.

(b) Dogma is awesome. (And other Kevin Smith movies too). I also like The Hudsucker Proxy (early Coen brothers), but no one has ever heard of it. Twin Peaks, on TV and movies, is also awesome.

(c) My tastes are pretty diverse. I tend to like rock music, but I like good musicians of all genres. I like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; James Taylor; the Dixie Chicks; Steely Dan; Enya; and Cyndi Lauper; Van Halen; and Heart.

(d) Not Japanese food. I discovered this on a trip to Japan recently. I'm rather addicted to junk food, but I'm a student -- we're supposed to eat unhealthy stuff.

The six things I could never do without

(1) My computer (2) Hope (3) Energy and water (I'm a climatologist, I see the world that way) (4) Music (5) Wikipedia (how did we even think before it existed) (6) My iPhone, which I love dearly

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Faith and religion. I'm still trying to convince people that having a religion doesn't mean you have to follow a lot of rules. "Love the Lord your God and love your neighbor as yourself" -- from this, all else follows. Of course, this is subjective and really hard to do, but it makes a lot more sense than not eating bacon. Which is really tasty. I'm also a discordian too. That last sentence had five words -- the Law of Fives holds!

I also spend tons of time thinking about politics and talking about it with my friends. I'm very liberal, but I've done enough politics to understand the importance of compromise.

I also spend not enough time planning D&D games for my friends.

On a typical Friday night I am

At DRAGON, the campus role-playing games club which meets every Friday. On a typical Monday or Thursday night I'm going to some kind of meeting for student government. I'm generally busy, and I'm usually out four nights a week. I'm not really a party person and I don't drink booze, but I don't really mind if you do.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I did fall in love really hard with a guy once. But he's kind of a fluke/special. I'm definitely not attracted to enough men to mark myself as "BI", but I'm open minded enough to at least consider other possibilities.

Also, I'm not connected with the Campus Crusade for Chaos and Confusion. Nope, no connection whatsoever.
