Your Notes

I am speculative, smartassed, and serene.

My Self-Summary

I'm a bit of a Goth, a bit of a geek, a bit of a writer and poet, a bit of a wit, a bit of a techie, a bit of a scholar, a bit of a cuddly sweetheart, a bit of a sarcastic urban elitist, a bit of a feminist, a bit of a socialist, a bit of a sensual hedonist, and a bit of a cripple. These might just add up to more than one whole person, which would neatly explain rather a lot.

I like to read voraciously and in many fields, blog (though less than I used to!), write fiction occasionally and poetry when I'm in love, visit museums, go see concerts, live theatre or stand-up comedy, and play tabletop RPGs and computer games/video games/board games of all sorts. In general, I live my life with background music, when I'm not living it with foreground music.

I'm also very interested in politics and current events, tend to keep up with them, and enjoy discussing them (though these days they seem calculated to drive me utterly mad and destroy my faith in humanity. And I liked my faith in humanity. Please don't take it away.)

What I’m doing with my life

I'm nearly finished law school in Ottawa, after a BA in political science and a minor in computing science back home in Edmonton.

My main ambition to be a diplomat. Or a judge. My two main ambitions are to be a diplomat, a judge, or an author. Wait. My three main ambitions...well, what can I say? I like to think that my education's equipped me to help develop a better future for society, and I very much want to.

As soon as I graduate this spring and get myself a job, anyway. Baby steps!

I’m really good at

I'm very skilled with words. A speaker, a writer, a listener, a kickass Scrabble player - words are my tool, my toy, and occasionally my weapon. Some would suggest that this last is usually in the form of terrible puns. These people tell lies.

Also, trivia. Someday you may see me on Jeopardy. My mother will probably disown me if this doesn't happen, so I have an incentive!

The first things people usually notice about me

Probably my cane (not a fashion accessory) and my spectacularly pale skin and hair (also not a fashion accessory).

Otherwise, an easy laugh, an enthusiastic reaction to music (as in a tendency to sing, hum, or headbang in public places, or, if I've had enough to drink, attempt to dance - and isn't that a sight, with a cane?), and, when the stars are right, my eyes.

If you've seen me and have an answer to this question, feel free to suggest I put it here. :)

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Far, far too many, so I'll stick to authors.

Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Jacqueline Carey, Guy Gavriel Kay, Lois McMaster Bujold, George R. R. Martin, Douglas Adams (RIP), Neal Stephenson, Nick Hornby, Douglas Coupland, Jane Austen, J.K. Rowling.

This is definitely not a complete list: I'll read most anything, really, but especially speculative fiction, and political or historical books.

TV: House, Gossip Girl, The West Wing, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Rome, The Tudors, Daria, Clone High, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Movies: Elizabeth. Kill Bill. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. The Usual Suspects. Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers and the Return of the King. Monty Python and the Quest For The Holy Grail. The Godfather, Cruel Intentions. Sin City, Serenity.

In general, I like TV shows or movies with witty dialogue, that focus on character interaction rather than "character vs. environment" plots. But I tend not to watch much of either unless I have company (otherwise, I find myself looking distractedly towards my bookshelf or the Internet), so I'm hopelessly behind on newer examples than the above. I'm sure the remedy to this is as clear to you as it is to me.

Music: Gothic metal/symphonic metal, some industrial music and synthpop, various kinds of alternative rock (various is an understatement - there's a reason my alt-rock playlist is called The Term Has Lost All Meaning), orchestral music, film scores and game soundtracks.

I'd call myself a fan of the following bands, as examples (see my last.fm for a more complete list): Tristania/Sirenia, Garbage, Tori Amos, Tragic Kingdom-era No Doubt, Marilyn Manson, Metric, Nine Inch Nails, Paradise Lost, Tool/A Perfect Circle, Lacuna Coil, Apocalyptica, Delerium, Massive Attack, Collide, Ayria, Machines of Loving Grace, VNV Nation, and the Cruxshadows.

Food: I have an incurable sweet tooth, so desserts of basically all kinds are rarely safe around me. Also, fruits (oranges, grapes, pineapples, pears especially) and things merely flavoured like fruit.

I also enjoy seafood in general, along with Hawaiian pizzas, fried plantains, and sundry other things I can't really remember offhand.

I'm always willing to be introduced to something. Having once willingly eaten a goat head, I can quite happily claim an open mind, along with a taste for some pretty spicy food: in my family, you either learned to like spice or you starved. I always wanted a little brother, too, but...he just couldn't hack it. Such a shame!

The six things I could never do without

Chai tea and other tasty beverages.
Access to information through books and the Net.
The big city and its art and culture.
My family and friends near and far.
Weird European metal bands.
Witty banter and commentary on life at large.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The magic of life - the little moments that make you glad to be here, and the people that show them to us through words, or art, or song.

I also take Santayana's little cliche to heart, and think upon the past in order to inform the future - and also because I find history intriguing. I've always loved a good story, and the true stories are the best stories.

On a typical Friday night I am

Probably either hanging out at home, or out with a few friends at a house party or gaming night, or seeing a show, or simply talking and relaxing at a cozy pub or cafe drinking cider, white wine, girly cocktail drinks, or the aforementioned chai tea.

Alternatively, rock-(band)-ing out with my sister diosatique, when she comes over. Feel like joining us? We could use a plastic-guitarist, because I'd rather sing (I love to sing), and she never outgrew hitting things with sticks.

For example, when she reads the previous sentence, she will promptly hit me with a stick.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

If a genie popped out of a lamp and offered me three wishes, I wouldn't ask to not be an albino, or to have never injured my legs. Self pity isn't my thing: life's too short for it.

On a more lighthearted note, I've actually made clothing purchases based on the advice of OkCupid quizzes. So far I'm pleased with the results.

You should message me if

You found my profile at random and want to tell me how. I am insatiably curious about you. Yes, even you.

You want to know my three wishes - or even tell me yours.

You're smart, independent, witty, and unashamed of any of it.

Fellow politics or tech geeks, word nerds, creative types, gamers, goths, sex-positive/kinky types, and the like are particularly welcome, but I seem to have a knack for unconsciously attracting people worth knowing, whatever their subculture. So I suppose I could say, as cliche as it sounds, that you should message me if you've gotten this far. :P

Special note to the polyamorous: I don't identify that way myself, but I'm open to the possibility with someone who does. "Poly if necessary, but not necessarily poly" - is how I'd sum it up, and if you get why I find this phrase hilarious you should definitely write me.
