My Self-Summary

I'm shy, but I can ramble on for ages about philosophy (particularly ethics and morals) and politics (I consider myself a left wing libertarian). I'm a big geek, so if you want to talk about computers or RPGs, I'm right there with you, but I promise to try not to babble incessantly. I love reading scifi and fantasy.

It's probably worth mentioning that I'm polyamorous. I'm perfectly comfortable just looking for friends, (and I am capable of respecting your desires) so don't feel the need to stress about that much.

I consider myself a Unitarian Universalist, although I only rarely go to church. I do consider myself a religious humanist. (nearly a secular humanist, but not quite) I used to be a Baptist, so I'm fairly familiar with the Christian Bible, and if you're a hardcore/literalist christian, you can probably expect to get into arguments with me. I do have some christian friends, but they tend to be more on the liberal side. If you don't try to evangelize me, I probably won't say much about it at all.

I'm a Utilitarian. Particularly, I like the works of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. I take exception to the frequent abuse (as I perceive it) of utilitarianism by economists, but I haven't yet found one who is willing to explain it clearly to me.

I have traveled a fair amount, and I enjoy it, though I rarely find that I have time to do so now. I've been to Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Peru, Chile, the Philippines, and 48 states (one day I'll get to Alaska).

I have a bunny. He bounces and plays and is generally cute. He gets hair on everything, but as far as I know, he's still fairly safe in terms of allergies. I've also acquired two cats, who get hair on things and definitely aren't safe in terms of allergies.

I don't like much sports, but I can sometimes sit patiently if needed. As an exception, I love watching racing. The real sort, like world rally or Le Mans, not stuff like Nascar where you just go around in a circle. Another exception is soccer, which I find at least mildly interesting, though I haven't watched any for years.

Also, one of my girlfriends has a son, and I spend a lot of time watching lego movies and carting him around to dance classes and such. :)

I am shy, geeky, and pensive

What I’m doing with my life
I used to be a computer executive who telecommuted, but now I've switched to a hopefully more relaxing job of being a bit of a programmer/manager. It seems fun so far, and I'm glad that the stress is lower.

I’m really good at
I'm really good at languages. To me, a programming language is merely a restricted language designed to precisely describe a series of actions. Or something like that. Anyway, I like learning new languages, or more about existing languages. I took both French and Spanish in high school, and if I could have I'd have taken Latin and/or German, too. I also tend to obsess over my own grammar and such, and although I may infrequently comment on the grammar of others, it makes no impact on how I view them. Assuming they see me the same way, I'm wasting my time worrying about my own grammar of course, but it's something of a habit at this point.

The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm quiet probably. Unless someone has started talking about politics or philosophy, in which case they probably think I'm quite opinionated and animated.

Physically, it's my very long, dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Favorite books: Generally I like scifi or fantasy or philosophy, though I don't think I could narrow the selection down to a particular favorite, or probably even a top 10. Eats, Shoots, and Leaves is a great book. I also love the Baen Free Library, and their pay books as well. I find mathematical books (ala Flatland and Metamagical Themas) to be quite interesting, too.

Favorite authors: David Eddings, C.S Freidman, Cherryh, Orson Scott Card, Frederik Pohl, Nancy Kress, R. A. Salvatore, Margeret Weis and/or Tracy Hickman, Terry Pratchett, Sheri S. Tepper, Douglas Adams

Favorite movies: Morir en San Hilario (To Die in San Hilario), El Habitante Incierto (The Uncertain Guest), The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Usual Suspects, Seven, Edward Scissorhands, The Princess Bride, Office Space, Seven Samurai, Monty Python (various), Star Wars (original trilogy), Shawshank Redemption, Dr. Strangelove

Favorite music: NiN, Stabbing Westward, Ladytron, Beethoven, Mussorgsky, Tiga, Smashing Pumpkins, The Connells (they're independant)... and many others. I'll listen to almost anything except rap or country, and I can make exceptions even then (e.g. I do like The Black Eyed Peas, as bizarre as that seems). Particularly, I like electronica, classical, and rock... It's tempting to go on and add rock 'n' roll, folk, doowap, show tunes (Phantom, Les Mis) etc, but I'd to keep the list vaguely short.

Favorite cuisines: Mexican food. Preferably with lots of cheese and beef. MMmm, cheese. Italian is also good. I've had some really good Indian food, though not often enough to know what. I love spicy food. If the food I'm eating is unfamiliar, I try to just find something with beef in it, yet for things with which I'm familiar, I usually end up getting something with little or no beef. (e.g. cheese enchiladas, cheese lasagne, etc.) I'm just strange that way.

Favorite TV shows: The Simpsons, Black Books, Futurama, Creature Comforts (British stop-animation), News Radio, Coupling (UK)

The six things I could never do without
1) my girlfriends, baerana and bonne_a_rienne

um... well, they are all I really couldn't do without, aside from the obvious necessities of human existance.

I'd be awfully sad without 2) cheese 3) books 4) friends 5) my bunny 6) a computer 7) the internet (I know. I know. I just stuck that on there.)

On a typical Friday night I am
probably at home. I like to go watch movies at a friend's house and that sort of thing, but more often than not, I don't manage to.

I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 28-44
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For new friends, long-term dating, activity partners
You should message me if
... any of this sounds interesting. I particularly like a good discussion. Most of my friends either have the same opinions that I do, or they are no longer interested in discussing the differences, so if you're up for debate, that's great. Or if you just want to pontificate, that's fine, too. Or if you're into D&D, or some other gaming.

If you're interested in more than friends, don't forget the polyamory thing I mentioned about. You don't have to date anyone else if you don't want to, but I'm already dating people, and don't expect me to stop.
