My Self-Summary

We used to move a lot when I was a kid, which made it tough keeping friends. You learn to deal with it, it gives you time to get to know yourself.

Many summers ago I decided to take up fishing as a hobby. I really did not know the first thing to fishing other than it required a fishing pole, a hook, bait, and a whole lot of patience. Nothing was going to stop me though, I was determined to catch a fish and eat it, because that's what you do when you catch fish.

I embarked on my adventure to the nearest retention pond with a smile on my face and my fishing pole on my shoulder. Now this wasn't the first time I've gone fishing, I perfected catching fish without any bait, so today was going to be no different. I'd cast my line, jostle the hook around and reel him in.

I sat perched on the bank of the pond, and cast my hook out into the murky water and waited. Giving the pole a tug here and a jerk there, I finally felt a snag. Algae? A rock? Oh my I got a fish! I yanked the pole and began to frantically reel in my line; I wasn't going to let this one go! Battling for what seemed an eternity, I held up my glorious prize. It couldn't have been more than a 6" bluegill, but I didn't know better. I rushed home with my catch sealed safely away in my zip lock bag and a sense of accomplishment.

Returning home victorious, I wasn't sure what the next step was. I always saw fish frozen at the store, so I too must freeze my fish. Grabbing several handfuls of ice cubes from the freezer I tossed them in the bag with my dinner and placed it safely in the freezer; now I must wait.

Several minutes passed and it started to dawn on me--I don't really like fish. I was overcome by guilt. I've taken this poor fishes life for no reason other than my own amusement, what a horrible person I've become. But wait, maybe I can redeem myself? Maybe the fish is still alive? I grabbed the fish out of the freezer and sprinted back to the pond. Out of breath and exhausted I pushed forward, I couldn't let this fish die now. Collapsing onto the bank, I sat for a moment and said a short prayer.

I pulled the fish from the bag, the ice cubes were frozen to the fish by now. Still hopeful, I placed it back into the waiting water. Time stood still while I waited for the fish to move, but it wasn't looking hopeful. Just as I was about to give up, I saw the fish begin to move. No way! The fish is going to live! The ice cubes begun melting off the fish and after what seemed like forever the fish swam away. I returned home happier than when I caught the fish, who would have thought?

I guess I grew up a little that day--It's never too late to do the right thing.

What I’m doing with my life

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
