Their result for The Moral Attribute Importance Test ...
You placed 6% difference on action versus inaction and 69% importance on consent!
- Failing to prevent the suffering of another is just as bad (or nearly as bad) as causing it. People have a responsibility to others.
- So-called "consensual crimes" are not wrong and should not be treated as such. People have the freedom to deviate from the majority or to make potentially poor decisions.
This is a combination of altruism and the freedom for each individual person to make potentially self-harmful or unpopular decisions. There are a few plausible things a set of beliefs could be based off of.
First, a sort of short-sighted altruism where the "other" is more important than the self, without recognizing that the benefit of the other requires the continued existence of the self.
Second, a hippie-like combination of hedonism and "live and let live" with a strong belief in interdependence.
Third, and this is similar to #2, a belief that all humanity flourishing is the highest moral good, including the individual in "all humanity"--with a somewhat low standard of what counts as flourishing for the individual.
