Their result for The do you make good art Test ...
As an artist you have: 100% good art taste, 93% good art instincts, and 100% good art cognition.
This test assessed three skill sets to determine your artskill.
1. "Taste." This seems straight forward. Do you have good taste when you are looking at/listening to/reading art. - for example the condom on canvas and the pics of Aids patients? That ought to have been scored an F.
Here's the thing with taste. Some really bad artists have really good taste. So a good score here is no guarantee of anything. But, no really good artists have really bad taste. So a bad score here means something.
You scored in the top range in taste. Congratulations. This doesn't mean that you make great art, or even good art, but it does mean that you know it when you see it. And that's the first step for anybody. Regardless, keep plugging away, even if you are the worlds greatest artist. Every individual great work you make is a gift to humanity. On the other hand, even if you often fail, you are doing "the lord's work" as the christians like to say.
2. Instincts are sometimes tough to differentiate from taste. But they are distinct. Take for example the question of the band picture. The best answer to that question was "play playstation games." Here's why. Posing undermines the "truth" of a photo when one takes pictures of people. Even though play playstation games is far from ideal, it was the best answer available. The second best was silly faces - posed, yes, but in such a way as to undermine pretention. The other two answers were two sides of the same coin. The beach and the dirty alley are both swaddled in contrivance. They just represent opposite ends of the contrivance spectrum.
Clean and direct is specifically the best strategy in most media most of the time. As is honesty. Which sentence? The short and direct one.
Bad instincts make for bad art usually. But sometimes people with very bad instincts make great art. Why? Well, it's because everybody occasionally gets out of their own way. You scored in the top range in instincts. That's great! I recommend, keep going with your gut. You may have great instincts but not really understand what that means. So here's an explanation.
Usually bad instincts are avoidance instincts - ie, oh this melody sounds too familiar, I ought to fuck it up a bit, make it sound harder, etc. That instinct is an avoidance instinct based on self-preservation. You'd rather make something unappealing than risk being accused of biting some piece of existing art. Such a fear is understandable, and incredibly common, but must be rejected! Your best ideas are your most intuitive. IF you think you've heard a melody before, but can't put your finger on where, DO NOT KILL THAT IDEA. That's your best song.
3. Art Cognition:
Bad artists sometimes make great art. But bad artists never both: make and release bad art and at the same time possess active, skeptical, and discerning art cognition. Why not? Because active art cognition eliminates the possibility of fluke. And therefore if your art cognition is good, you are objectively self critical. If you make something great, you accurately distinguish it from your lesser work. This precludes you from releasing lesser work for public consumption. Ergo, for all intents and purposes, good art cognition precludes the label "bad artist."
This portion of the test was comprised of questions like the ones involving the role/effect of digital media. The answer is that they are both viable independent media and very powerful ways to disseminate older media.
Remember: New media never replace older media. They simply add to the total number of media available to work in.
Freedom from misconception. Some of the question tested to see if you held any popular misconceptions. "Waiting for the muse" and "naturalistic" or other flightly, emotional attitudes towards art are wrong.
Let me clarify. Art may be very very emotionally evokative. But it is the artist's job specifically to not "just do what s/he feels. It is the artist's job to make decisions. According to what standard? The truth. Art decisions conform to, and manifest, greater truths - immortal truths.
Topical art is almost always bad. And art comes, when it is true, from metaphysical sources. Artists channel - they do not create.
It is important always to diminish the artist, therefore, and elevate the art.
Key: Reject aesthetic relativism. Quality does exist. Truth is objective. Even though we cannot decisively say which art is true and which is not, that does not change the fact that some art is absolutely better than other art. This fact is crucial. It must be understood before one can become a truly, consistently great artist.
You scored 85-100 in art cognition. Great! Keep thinking hard. The thing is, we are all taught wrong from day one. And most of us will never overcome that. Certainly not alone. I credit Komputadora, an artist friend of mine, for helping me overcome many of my misconceptions. Find another artist to talk with. Engage in dialectic - conversation that aims to determine truth - instead of rhetoric.
If you are humble and interested in learning how to get better, you can and will. You can always email me for help if you'd like. Google: Pop Goes Lethal and visit our art site. We are always interested in helping anyone who wants to make better art. For free, of course. Our's is a non-commercial venture.
