The Mauser C96 'broomhandle' (so called for the 'broom-like' shape of the grip) was one of the first automatic pistols produced, and one of the most important handguns of the first half of the twentieth century, seeing service on both sides in the Boer War (where one was carried by Winston Churchill, then a young war correspondent) and with Germany in the Great War.  A shortened version, known as the 'bolo' for Bolshevik, was ordered in great numbers by the young Red Army during the Russian Civil War; more concealable, they were also common in the hands of more subtle revolutionaries throughout Europe.  Numerous example could also be found in use by gangsters and warlords alike in the anarchic China of the twenties and thirties.  A full-automatic version, the M712 'Schnellfeuer', was also produced from 1932, primarily for the Chinese market, a precursor to the machine-pistols of today.  Although traditionally chambered for 7.63x25mm Mauser, 9mm versions, known as 'Red Nines' for the crimson numerals engraved for purposes of differentiation on their grips, were also common.  The Spanish produced a near-copy, the Astra Model 900, and the Chinese produced their own pistols, with varying degrees of workmanship, including some in .45ACP.  Other famous users include TE Lawrence and, in a backhanded fashion, Han Solo.

Calibre: 7.63x25mm Mauser, 9x19mm Parabellum

Magazine: 6, 10 or 20-round magazines available.

Introduced: 1896

The Steyr-Hahn M11/M12 (9x23mm Steyr, 8-round magazine, introduced 1911) was the standard pistol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the Great War, and was widely used thereafter throughout central and southeastern Europe and beyond.  The rare full-automatic version was used in the 1934 assassination by Nazi agents of Austrian dictator Englebert Dolfuss.  The Roth-Steyr M1907 (8mm Steyr,10-round magazine, introduced 1907), was used by the Austro-Hungarian cavalry in the Great War, as the Steyr-Hahn was used by the infantry.  The Campo-Giro (9mm Largo, 7-round magazine, introduced 1912) was the earliest Spanish automatic pistol and the precursor to the Astra line.
