Queen Anne of England, last of the Stuarts

Anne, the last monarch of the House of Stuart, was a good politician and monarch in difficult times.  She succeeded William III who came to power in the Glorious Revolution.  She was pregnant at least eighteen times!  Incredibly, she survived all of this.  Unfortunately her only son to survive infancy died at age 11, precipitating a succession crisis that ended in the agreement for the crown to go to Sophia of Hanover.  The chief notable event during Anne's reign was the War of the Spanish Succession, where a number of European powers pitted themselves against Louis XIV in a bid for who would be put on the Spanish throne.  Instrumental in this battle was Lord Marlborough, Queen Anne's favorite and best general, who was the only person on earth to routinely and successfully stand up to Louis XIV in battle at this time.  Another interesting development in Anne's reign was the establishment of a two-party Parliament, with the Whigs and the Tories.  Anne was instrumental in pushing through the Treaty of Utrech, which eventually ended the War of the Spanish Succession, and she did so by creating TWELVE new peers, creating more peers in one day than Queen Elizabeth I created in fifty years.
