The Lovecraft Vocabulary Challenge

You may be in the dark about what's really dark and evil, but you're not ignorant.  You've got a library of information at your fingertips - including an uncut copy of the Necronomicon (if you don't value your sanity, of course).  It seems that if something dark and scary is happening, somebody's going to ask you to look into it.  If I were you, I'd find some junior member of the staff to do it for you.  In the meantime, brush up on your forbidden knowledge and go for the post-graduate course!

Arcade:  A long arched building or gallery

Archaean:  Of the earliest geological age

Batrachian:  Of or relating to vertebrate amphibians without tails, such as frogs and toads

Beetling:  Projecting; overlapping

Boreal:  Of or pertaining to the north

Chiaroscuro:  A pictorial representation in terms of light and shade without regard to color

Connexion:  An archaic form of the word "connection"

Cycad:  A palm-like, cone-bearing evergreen plant

Cyclopean:  Massive; huge

Dado:  The lower portion of the wall of a room, decorated differently from the upper section, as with panels.

Febrile:  Feverish; displaying qualties of having a fever

Foetor:  An offensive odor; stench
