Walking Through Flames
He first came to meet me at my old job, Rack Room Shoes. I was in my Wal-Mart looking uniform. He was in jeans, some music t-shirt, and flannel. I pretended to help him look for shoes for 30 min. Then we hugged good-bye and he strummed my spine like a guitar, real dancy like. I knew I had him then and wanted him right then.
Our first date was on Presidents' Day. We went to see Juno and he kissed me during the credits, out of no where, and when we went out side he had my cheap red lip stick all over his face. We laughed an awesome belly-laugh and went to Starbucks. When we were sitting with our coffee outside squinting into the sun and feeling so lucky to have found each other, he caught my eye and said "God Bless OkCupid."
He inspires me to be a better person. He encouraged me to chase after my dream of teaching. He spent hours on my resume and sat down with me to fill out the applications to colleges in town. I became an adjunct professor at 3 universities.
I helped him house hunt and pack up and clean the place he rented. I scrubbed his toilet with a pumice stone. And boxed up the comics he had stacked about like an old man with newspapers. We have gone to see every comic book movie together in the past two years.
On December 28th, 2008 he returned from visiting his parents up north and his father came back with him. There was no place for us to be alone. We searched college campuses and local parks, everywhere was too crowded. So we settled for my parents' backyard porch-swing. And we kissed till we were out of breath. He told me he wanted me to move in with him. I told him I was kind of hoping for something more serious. He whispered into my ear, "I want to marry you." and I kissed him and then pulled back to look into his smiling eyes and he said, "...if you want to marry me?" and very quietly I said "I do."
We tried not to tell anyone about our engagement till he could get a ring. But that trying not to tell only lasted a few hours. Our joy spread like wildfire. The ring came Easter Sunday 2009. We were married 10-10-09. We honeymooned on a cruise to the Bahamas. But that's not where I end with happily ever after. We are currently going though a huge financial struggle: broken car and paying things late and buying generic groceries and NSF fees. But all this stress just makes me love him more. Because I've realized if I have to walk through flames with anyone, I want it to be him, and he promised me that, that person will always be him.
