Long Distance Romance
My fiancee and I have been meaning to write to you for quite some time now about our incredibly fantastic, long distance, meant-to-be tale of romance! Here is the (somewhat) abridged version of how we met & fell in love:
My fiancee, Toby was living in San Francisco at the time we met (April 2009). She was working on her Masters of Music at the time, dating a couple people here and there from OkCupid, Craigslist, and around the neighborhood. She had given herself a rule to NOT date or look at profiles of women outside the Bay Area. One night I, Betsy, was in Philadelphia browsing around women in San Francisco and Los Angeles to help my friend Erica look for dates. After a couple hours of looking for Erica I ended up looking at my own matches. I was about to go to sleep when all of a sudden my eyes caught a brief glimpse of Toby's profile picture--a small 50 x 50 pixel photo of this beautiful woman with incredibly gorgeous, honest eyes. I knew it. Right then, that holy cow --this one was going to be a doozy! I spent a while looking at her profile, reading her responses and questions about her ideal partner. I went to bed and the next day I found a message in my inbox from Toby. (She had broken her own rule -- because I was in Philadelphia and New York so I was WAY OUTSIDE of the Bay Area). She wrote one simple sentence, "Well, you are very attractive, if you're ever in San Francisco we could make a hot date happen!" (with her phone number attached at the end). I was impressed, attracted, and we struck up a long chain of messages about everything from movies to ice cream, favorite vegetables, and our personal information.
A day later we spoke on video chat for the first time and couldn't sign off -- nearly 8 hours later we went on with our lives, but elated to have found someone we were excited about! Three days after that I bought a plane ticket to come and visit Toby in San Francisco--originally I was only going to stay for 10 days, but I stayed for 3 weeks. After arriving in San Francisco I got on BART and took the train into the city to meet her, nervously I stared out the window. One of the first things I saw was literally, a wooden sign carved with the words, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." Wow. I get it. This is it. The second I saw her down the street I had to stop walking because I knew this was it. I was totally hers. We began a beautiful courtship and relationship with all of her opera friends here in the city. I had been working as a photographer in New York so I was busy taking pictures of everything.
I flew back to Philadelphia, we spoke constantly, the romance developed, and I flew back to SF again for another 3 weeks, and then at the end of the summer (by now it's August) Toby came to visit my family for a few weeks. Everyone loved her, including the older generations in my family - what an added bonus! August came to an end and on September 1st, 2009 I officially relocated to San Francisco. Now I live here, it's been a year and a half that we've been together, we got engaged and spent the summer traveling in Italy.
Hold on a minute, Toby wants me to include one more thing: "Every day I feel so lucky that I've found Betsy. I can't believe it! We never would have found each other without OkCupid. Thank you a million times for all you did for us!"
So that's it! If you'd like to hear more about us you can check out our websites. I (Betsy) am a photographer and Toby is a soprano. Best of luck to everyone searching for love! Don't lose faith- it will happen when you least expect it!
