You stumble back from the device, tumbling into a pile of junk. You stand and brush yourself off, thinking, "Hey, this used to be lab's MRI machine, but it's been picked over for parts like a dead gazelle by vultures." While enjoying your simile and ignoring the unnecessary presence of an MRI machine even in your own universe's lab, you are startled to hear the sound of gunfire outside.
Rushing to the window you see a vast expanse of twisted girders and blackened desert. A fracas has broken out between what look to be rival gang members--allegiences demonstrated by facial tat colors and the angle of their hair spikes. They trade bullets and profanities, between cries of "Man, I don't believe in nothing!" and surprisingly penetrating comments of "If only somebody had instilled in us a cultural heritage to preserve!"
After they've shot each other to pieces, you head out and load up on all the scattered weaponry. It's a rough universe you've gotten yourself into, but you think you're ready for it.
