• Learned and transmitted across generations, the term "Ebonics" is synonymous with a number of other terms that have been advanced since the early 1960s to describe the language system of African Americans including "Black English," "African American Language" (AAL), "African American Vernacular English" (AAVE), "African Language Systems," "Black Sounds," or "Pan-African Communication Behaviors" As with all spoken languages, AAVE is extremely regular, rule-governed, and systematic.
