I hate math. It can stay outta my box, LOL!

So is she saying she doesn't like sex? Cause isn't sex a form of multiplying?

The correct answer is listed twice making this question broken!

The correct answer is listed twice making this question broken!

Given  - A, B, C and D, which 2 are listed twice?

Aug 2, 2008 11:30pm

lol...I looked and saw A and D as being the same at first, too...just because I was looking for two that were the same. I'm a bit dyslexic, though, when it comes to numbers.

My problem with these questions is still that even if I get it wrong, I want my partner to get it right. I don't want my partner making the same mistakes I do.

i think i have dyslexia, I picked the wrong answer!

Oct 25, 2008 2:29pm

I have to chime in here and admit that I too set a fairly high importance on potential matches answering this question correctly.

I think this is why I have the "More mathematical" award - the math-related questions on here are so easy that even though I'm not particularly a math person, I rate them highly in importance. This one and the apple question are good example of this - it's rearranging three numbers and basic arithmetic. I'd say those are important skills. :P

Dyslexic people, of course, get an out - that question is almost designed to trip up a dyslexic person.

this is entirely a pattern-matching question. If you're good at pattern-matching, are you good at math? I'm developing a theory on that. I really do think that good pattern-matchers are good at math as it is in school. What do you think?

Oct 25, 2008 2:38pm

now THIS was an awesome question. there should be more like that one. even harder too.

Oct 25, 2008 2:54pm

I think so. Pattern matching and math both involve dealing with abstract concepts analytically. You could even say that math is basically all pattern matching - patterns between numbers, operators and equations.

What is this, the MAT for entrance to graduate school? Been there and done that. Who gives a good dam unless their trying to get into graduate school? What does this have to do with having fun?

Dec 2, 2008 3:54pm

I rated this as Very Important. I wish there were more questions like this to weed out people. If you don't like the question you can always choose to SKIP it. I do that with plenty of questions I don't like, you should try it.

wtf does this ? mean

This question is one of the most significant. I would rate it as mandatory. People must be capable of dealing with such simple problems. The recognition of patterns and structures is essential to most things I hold dear.

You can associate each character with its given number: ((S,8); (T,9); (A,4); (L,7); (E,5)). This is a mapping. You map a character to an integer. The character is the key, the integer its respective value. Now just rearrange the keys. S and T remain at their original positions. A, L and E go through a cycle. A -> L -> E (-> A);

Or more simply:
89475 -(4 5)-> 89574 -(4 7)-> 89547;

This is called a permutation. Wonderful mathematics can be built upon it. You all should check out abstract algebra, group theory and combinatorics. And topology! Braid theory. ^_^ Yummy.

I have not yet gotten a math question wrong, yet somehow in comparison to one girl I was less mathematically inclined according to OKC...

Jan 26, 2009 5:50am

When I looked at the question, I just realized that the "L" moved two spaces to the left. So I looked for an answer that started with "8" and had "5" as its third letter. It's very simple, really.

If this were a mathematical problem, I wouldn’t care if my mate got it right. But it is a logic problem, and a simple one at that, and I would like my mate to possess basic logic skills.

@cmejennnie: Your answer is correct, but you can’t express how you solved it. You go out of your depth in your explanation: the letters do not “represent numeric values;” they are just assigned otherwise unrelated numbers. The numbers are not significant as such, but only as symbols. They could be hieroglyphs or little photos. Conceiving of it as a math problem is the decoy that the complainers fall for.

The two words use the same five letters in a different order. The answer comes from reordering the numbers in a parallel sequence.

@tangofox: You complicate the problem unnecessarily, and romance your ego by calling this “esoteric.” All you’re doing is falling for the same decoy by accepting the numerical value of the symbols and executing no more complex a mathematical action than adding the numbers’ ordinal position to their numerical value. You overcomplicate by explaining ordinal numbers as the assignment of “an number modulus 10” [sic]. Outside of this being simplistic (esoteric), you produce an incorrect answer. The question is multiple choice. If your answer is not one of the options provided -- there are no write-ins – it’s wrong.

@Etenim: You get to the correct response, but by way of China. You fall into the same trap of interpreting this as a math problem. Your “permutation ... abstract algebra, group theory and combinatorics. And topology! Braid theory” is the same kind of self-stroking as tangofox’s “esoteric modulus.”

@KingDubya: Kudos. The question is no more complex than you make it.

STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to...

Feb 3, 2009 12:13pm

When I did this the first time I rated it very important. Unfortunately I did it backwards. It takes an embarrassing seven days before you can answer it again.

Incidentally, I used to write software for air traffic control.

I am always like why isn't my answer not available incomlete again, where's the general math questions?? So ,I couldn't leave it alone in math I have to know WHY ? Then I was thinking I could get it right and look ever so smart, Plus , I cannot resist to know what answer is . so i took a shot at it my answer would have been 57498 stale steal opposite so in my kaylavinas world thats me it should be put on the board, or where's the choice all of the above ??? The world is so unfair ... Look if your blonde the answer is 57498 all the way. and if your thinking she's really stupid then u are for reading all this nonsense . If u really care then you would be like I care more about this cool chicks phone number instead of some stale question, and you would steal me up before someone else does..stale, steal ,sheal ,shmal ,who gives a rats ass ?? I think I got this crap right anyway
