Somme people just don't really say anything that you can easily respond to. They expect you to do all the work of keeping it going. I assumme that means they don't reallly want to talk.

Why do most "conversations" die after 1 or 2 messages?
share your thoughts, experiences..

It falls under the same mechanics as dating - as things go on, they find out more about you.  In some cases this leads them to realizing they don't like you, and they either stop responding or subconsciously provide no respondable material.

Because it takes two to tango, as they say...

For myself what I find happens is a girl will reply LARGELY just to be nice.

Where I have the feeling that she's not really into me. I wouldn't really count these as a conversation that died.

Because many people admittedly will ignore match and profile data and go by the picture only, attempting to turn physical attraction into more than what it is. After those people talk a short while, they realize there is nothing else to build on.

This. Forced conversation is awkward and boring.

People are shallow.  They don't know what they're looking for.  They get cold feet.  They were never serious to begin with.  They found another message more interesting.

Most women say they fall for a guy based on his personality, and it's very hard to convey a full sense of your personality in a message no matter how well written the message is.

I am fairly new, like a week, and I have yet to actually have a conversation period. I think I messaged like half a dozen people and no responses back. So I guess I am too lame to talk to, OR, OkCupid is really just another place where people want to upload photos and have no intention on meeting new people.

Someone usually needs to plan a date around the 3rd message or so, otherwise, you are in pen pal territory (that usually dies off).

My 2 cents.

Learn to spit game. Idle chatter leads to masturbation.

Jun 20, 2011 12:08am

I just had to cut off (or I was going to be myself) an exchange with wayyy too many messages.

I'd already said: "enough, let's go out" in so many words.

And still got back: "yeahh! but I'm so busy :(" in so many words.

So be glad that happens for you in 111 fewer messages.

I must state how short most of these were, and that would be about two lines each, with short essays here and there.

Either way, considering we're all (still) on this site, ignore the advice of everyone and learn from their stories of failure.

Jun 21, 2011 12:47am

Sometimes, people respond out of courtesy, rather than out of actual interest.  It's hard to keep a conversation going when only one side is actually interested.

Just get a cat.

It's all in your approach.  I send out a message always with the intent of getting her number after my second response.   It's been a fairly successful approach, take with that as you will.

Because you're boring?

Jun 23, 2011 6:19am

I'm curious if short conversations are the norm or if this the OP's issue.

I've only been here for a little while, but I've come to expect long conversations (unless the first message includes a phone number, which translates into texting). I'm having a hard time keeping up.

If the thread isn't funny within a page, why bother?

Because contrary to common belief, women are actually socially inept.
