STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to...

Intelligence is a trait many people value, believe it or not.

Ewcheck your response - they are all dissimilar

Honestly, this is incredibly fucking simple.

STALE to STEAL. The last letter (the E) moves from the last position to the third position.
89475 to 89547.  The last number (the 5) moves from the last position to the third position.

How important is intelligence in dating and relationships? I'm sure different people value it to greater and lesser degrees, and there are obviously other factors at play in finding a compatible partner, but I value intelligence a lot, this question is not difficult to understand, and if you can't figure it out... I don't want to go on a date with you. Because you're probably a moron.

What really confuses me is how my correct answer often shows up in red, telling me that my answer is unacceptable to the other person.

It's extremely easy for many people.  Many of us rate intelligence very highly in a partner, so alarm bells would ring at anyone who wouldn't even bother to try answering it.

I must say I am by no means a genius, but I find it extremely interesting to read people's logic behind this question "STALE is to STEAL" as 89475 is too...(?) At one point I decided I wanted to become a lawyer and decided to take the LSAT, for anyone who doesn't know what the LSAT is, it simply a standardized test that scores your logic skills. There are many questions on the LSAT test that take the form of the very question OKCupid is asking in this non-mathematical question. Keep in mind what differentiates a good lawyer from a great lawyer is the way that person analyzes and approaches such a question as the one above. Naturally, everyone's brain ticks in a different way and can view a question like this from their own perspective given their education, on-the -job experiences and so forth. That said, it is my belief that you can not dismiss nor call someone a stupido or retard because they did not answer in the same way you did. With that in mind, how a person approaches a logic question, albeit, it may not be viewed as the correct answer or the "standard answer" according to what a board of lawyers or supposed geniuses devised, but if one can submit their reasoning behind the answer they gave then you have to give those individuals credit for attempting to answer the question correctly.

I decided to take a different career path from one of a lawyer to that of a Business Development Executive. When a group of lawyers were able to convince a jury of twelve on the basis of "if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit" it was at that instant I lost my desire and passion to become a lawyer.

So, for those of you who used a mathematical approach to come up with you answer to the question "STALE as to STEAL" as 89475 is too....that is your individual approach and more power to you. I answered the question from a logical approach which consisted of simply assigning a number to each of the letters in the word "STALE" because the Einstein's of OKCupid, in my opinion, already gave you the key to deduce what the correct answer should be. S is #8, T is #9, A is #4, L is #7 and E is #5. So if you follow the progression of STALE being the first word and it then changes to STEAL, then logic dictates that it is a simple logical swapping of the letters in STALE to STEAL, right?  So if STALE is 89475, then logically one must swap letters E, A, and L. Therefore, the correct answer from my view point would be S's number assignment is unchanged and the same goes for T which is 9, follow me so far? So, we already know two letters and their associated assigned numbers 8 and 9 because they were already provided for us and there is no need to change or swap these letters and associated numbers 8 and 9 to turn STALE into STEAL. In the word STEAL...S is 8 and T is 9, the E in STALE takes number assignment 5, so we assign E #5, A is assigned number 4 in STALE so we assign A #4 and finally L is assigned with the number 7 so L is #7. Therefore, by simple logic all you have to do is change the letters E, A, and L and you have your answer. "STALE is to STEAL" as 8(S)9(T)4(A)7(L)5(E) is to 8(S)9(T)5(E)4(A)7(L) and there is your answers. STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to 89547.

I challenge anyone to disagree with my answer that 89547 is correct.

Remember don't over-analyze a question when the answer is already clear and present!

News flash: conjectures drawn from logical induction have no single right answer. This is a matter of pattern recognition (which humans are great at), and I think as long as someone can supply a valid line of reasoning for their choice, all of the possible answers could be considered "correct."

89547 is the simplest choice, but I'd be interested to hear someones line of reasoning to justify some other choice. It could reveal a genius of creative thought, or make plain that they just don't give a shit and took a wild guess.

Either way, a good question to get to know how a person thinks (or doesn't).

I concur!

I LOVE THIS QUESTION ABOUT LOGIC!  It is one of my required responses I look for to determine reason and if they are willing to work thru it!  If so, it means they will more than likely work through relationships as well.  It is a must for me, if they have answered it correctly.

Most men DO not answer correctly, of the three questions I specifically look for in responses.

Aug 22, 2013 12:56pm

Most men DO not answer correctly, btw...

Most women do NOT answer this correctly either, btw. I hope you're not implying that men are any less logical than women, because popular wisdom is to the contrary. Not that that misperception is correct to any degree. Claiming that either gender is inherently more logical than the other is sexist. Just saying.

Aug 22, 2013 5:14pm

Well, I can only speak from what my experience has been "reading" the male responses...and MOST have not answered correctly.  Either they do not take the time to think through the q or just don't care.  I am not implying anything about women because I do not have access to those responses.   You are reading into my response something I did not state NOR imply.  Chill, baby.  :)

it is really easy but for some reason i keep seeing people put 89457 how can anyone tell me logic behind this mistake

Yay we can reason at the level of a 5 year old

Wow, I found the forum part of okc. And I found this thread. Now, if I could only find my hope for the future of the human race......

Dec 22, 2013 4:10pm

You are pretty dull if you don't realize that any of the answers can be mathematically justified and proven correct.

Dec 23, 2013 6:18am

Ok, I'm pretty dull.

Justify mathematically for me how STALE is to STEAL can be

as 89475 is to

  • 89457
  • 98547
  • 89754

Dec 23, 2013 10:06am

Well, since I find myself in this thread, surrounded by mathematically illiterate peasants who revel in their own ignorance of the fact that any answer is potentially correct and who are proudly arrogant and publicly foolish in their shared belief that 89547 is the only correct answer, I guess I would benefit this community by offering to prove any one of the answers. Which answer should I prove could be mathematically correct? I'm not going to do all three.

I don't think it's right to let people of otherwise average intelligence go around making themselves look like dunces in public by claiming that an answer besides 89547 is wrong.

Dec 23, 2013 10:23am

Prove any one of those three answers mathematically correct, then, you may choose which.

STALE is to STEAL, as 89475 is to

Your choice:    89457, 98547, 89754

I don't think it's right to let people of otherwise average intelligence go around making themselves look like dunces in public by claiming that an answer besides 89547 is wrong.

Since you feel that way, then you really must give a direct demonstration to enlighten us, otherwise we will go on making ourselves look like dunces, and you wouldn't feel right about that.

GtL is indistinguishable from a bot that strings together words in grammatical forms without ever making any sense. He is always wrong and just plain off. Like the uncanny valley.

Dec 23, 2013 10:37am

Well he does seem to have the notion that stringing numbers together in any order is equally valid mathematically.

His evasive responses do have a heavy aroma of melted plastic to them.

I refuse to play this proletarian game. Pick one.
