I can't see them, but can they see me?

Jan 20, 2012 12:14pm

Yes. There's already several replies from hidden users in this thread already but I guess you can't see them. Nvm.

What the hell is a hidden user? I got an email once that said I could see them, but I still don't really know what they are.

I was going to answer this question,
but the lack of an apostrophe to
show possessive case changed my mind.

If you look at a profile and don't want to see that person again on your sidebar, you click Hide under the Message/Wink button. Then they are Hidden.

a simple search or using that "help" button below would have already answered this.  Whatever.

Hiding Matches

If you keep seeing a profile you don’t want to see anymore, you can hide it. That member will no longer appear in your sidebar matches, homepage matches, Match Search results, your Visitors list, or anywhere else on the site. Hiding profiles works both ways, meaning that hiding a user will also hide your profile from them; see the Privacy help page for more about this.

To hide a user, visit their profile and click the “Hide” button in the upper-right.

If you’re looking at Match Search results, you can also hide someone by clicking the “Hide” button next to their result.

Hiding Users

If you don’t want a particular person appearing in your Match Search, Quickmatch, homepage and sidebar matches, or in your Visitors list, you can hide them. Hiding is reciprocal, and will also stop you from appearing in all of the same areas for the person you hid. Read more about hiding OkCupid members on the Matches help page.

Note that this will not prevent them from messaging you; if you want to block a member, see below.

short/tldr answer:  no

Thanks Burgh42, I was using Hidden Users as a section name rather than referring to individuals, but pedantry noted... Also looked at many pages of forum Q's before asking.

Interesting. I had an email that said I was now able to see some hidden population of people who were more attractive or something...I dunno, I didn't care, and deleted it, so I'm not sure what that was about. Any ideas?

Pretty sure what you got was an okc message that said you've been rated as more attractive than half of the okc population and that other more attractive people would be shown to you as matches, and you to them.

Pretty sure everybody got that message.

We are very pleased to report that you are in the top half of OkCupid's most attractive users. The scales recently tipped in your favor, and we thought you'd like to know.

How can we say this with confidence? We've tracked click-thrus on your photo and analyzed other people's reactions to you in QuickMatch and Quiver.

Your new elite status comes with one important privilege: You will now see more attractive people in your match results.

This new status won't affect your actual match percentages, which are still based purely on your answers and desired match's answers. But the people we recommend will be more attractive. Also! You'll be shown to more attractive people in their match results.

Suddenly, the world is your oyster. Login now and reap the rewards. And, no, we didn't just send this email to everyone on OkCupid. Go ask an ugly friend and see.

Well. Apparently I was right to ignore it then, since it was just a marketing ploy. I wonder if some people got it and were like "WTF, I'm a fat, slovenly heap of ugly, how can this be?"
