That's a new one on me - probably some seeeekrit, as-yet undocumented algorithm.

If I were to throw out a wild guess - I would guess it combines more than 2-3 parameters together.

Well, don't know how to say that.. But to get it straight: These matches doesn't look that good as the "normal" ranking. Possibly it has something to do with scoren these matches up, which usally don't get that much messages

Might be something like lower scoring people who share one of your interests? Just guessing.

Mar 17, 2010 4:46pm

It certainly seems to do something, because I generally get the same 10-15 in different order.

But not interests (that sort of thing is giving this place far too much credit), as some of them have blank profiles. And none actually seem to have any interests highlights...

I think someone with no interests and a blank profile would be perfect for you, Discojer.

Is special blend the default for free accounts now? I can't get it to remember my option when I search.

Apr 11, 2010 5:36am

If something is not getting saved from session to session, it is generally an issue with your browser's cookie setting or implementation.  Sometimes security tools will mess with web cookies too.

May 1, 2010 8:43am

I had no problem with my browser cookies working to save the sessions and remember my last search BEFORE special blend was put in and absolutely nothing changed on my end then so I'm guessing that messed something up and still haven't fixed it.

I also have 4 computers I check okcupid from all of them go back to special blend. It's annoying. I have no interest in using a search method that had an order I can't hear about.

I would send a comment/bug report to the site staff via the feedback link near the bottom of the page if I were you.  I already have.

May 1, 2010 4:38pm

Maybe it's a new sponsorship thing?  It will eventually be brought to you by some brand of coffee. Like for a while "smiles" were brought to you by I think Scope?  And "woos" by chapstick? And then finally "winks" by Visine. Then again, I could be hallucinating some of those...

May 2, 2010 7:40am

Checked. "Special blend" appears every time I go to "Match Search".

I did a while ago. magicamethist22 has. A few people I know did. It's still doing it. So I say the devs are either really really pushing a search method I don't want to use or... slacking on a free service I demand works for the 0 dollars and 0 cents I pay for it every month because I'm that grateful. yep.

May 5, 2010 10:48pm

Dunno about slacking, sometimes bugs are not as easy to fix as you might think, either because the reason is not clear, or because they are dependent on other things that can't be immediately changed, etc.

Thanks for sending the feedback complaints tho - much more effective than just posting a rant on some miscellaneous forum thread.  :)

I was told its a feature that was added not a bug.

May 6, 2010 5:16am

A "feature" where you can't change the default search type?  Or do you just mean "special blend" was added to the list of search types?

Because I think it's fine that option is there, but if it's undocumented how it works and you want to search a specific and predictable way, having to reset it from that unwanted default every single time you do a match search is a pretty big pain.

May 6, 2010 12:40pm

I think if you go directly to /match it will load your saved settings but every link on the site overrides your saved sort. I agree its a pain but that's the way it is.

May 6, 2010 1:24pm

I was told its a feature that was added not a bug.

I don't think you can call removing a feature, like it saving the order your search appears in, a feature in itself unless you are Microsoft. So I doubt that is it.

May 6, 2010 1:59pm

PotatoMaster:  Given that erikok is staff here, I would be inclined to believe his characterization over anyone else's guesses.  :P

Why it's considered a feature is still a mystery, of course.  Perhaps I will do some more looking into that..

May 6, 2010 2:45pm

Advertising. Which from OKC's point of view, would be a feature. Maybe the deal fell through or something.

Either that or the staff just likes screwing around with users. Which is a more likely explanation, but I still think the first one could also be right (since as mentioned, other things have been sponsored on here).
