My self-summary

I'm a graduate student in the History program at (The) Ohio State University. I'm originally from Washington state, but in the last three years I've managed to make Columbus my home. Columbus is a great place, with lots of fun places to go!

I do a lot of work on the study of masculinity and femininity in history, and my current work is on writers in the 1950s and how they thought about masculinity. I teach History of American Capitalism and History of Sexuality, which are both a blast but tend to get a very different crowd of students.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm an American History Grad Student. Which means I am often reading American History. Or other history. Or writing about it. It's a great fit for me, because I really love teaching history to people because I get really excited about it. I also am really happy about the fact that I have a job that lets me do what I want to do and think about interesting things all the time.
I’m really good at
Well, at this point I've been doing American history for longer than I can think about comfortably. So I'm really good at talking about that, or politics, or about the ideas of thinkers from the past. I like to think I'm a good conversationalist, which is essential nowadays since I spend so much of my time teaching.

I'm also really good at telling stories, or so people tell me. I'm proud if my ability to keep stories interesting and know how to tell them. I also am proud of my jokes, but they're often incredibly long and borderline trolling, so be warned.

Oh, and I also like to think I'm a good writer. I have to be, since I spend a lot of time writing nowadays.
The first things people usually notice about me
I've recently started wearing coats and ties a lot, as my look. I also have a yoyo that I often twirl as I walk from place to place.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Doctor Who and Sherlock are my favourite shows, although I adore Babylon Five, Dollhouse, and Star Trek. I don't watch a ton of TV, except when I'm watching with another person-to me TV is an activity to do without someone else and talk about.

Books: The short stories of Jorge Borges, Infinite Jest, Neuromancer, House of Leaves, This Town Will Never Let Us Go, Doctor Who books, lots of Sci-Fi, especially cyberpunk.

Music: Electric Light Orchestra, Pink Floyd, Yes, Supertramp, King Crimson, Patti Smith, Tom Petty, Traveling Wilburys, Plastic Ono Band, Wilco.

I like food. Pizza, Chinese, Mexican, burgers. I miss teriyaki, and have yet to find a place in Columbus that makes it like they do on the west coast.
Six things I could never do without
Internet (though I wish I could)
Fiction books
People to talk to
Teriyaki (although Columbus seems not have this!)
Cool jackets
Friends to share things with
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I like making connections between disparate things: Star Trek and the Frontier Thesis, The doubledown and American society. I also think a lot about plotting for stories, and how people communicate ideas, and of course, history, because I read a lot of it.

My philosophy is to only do what you are interested in, and be interested in everything you do. As a result, I try to over analyze things in order to see them from many different angles.
On a typical Friday night I am
Pizza, beer, and lots of friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I don't know. Ask me what you're curious about?
You should message me if
If you have opinions, and like to talk about them.
If you have a passion for something and really care about it.
If you sometimes have bizarre ideas
If you need a partner in crime.
If you are awesome (or even if you aren't)
You want to!
