My self-summary
Hi, I'm Phil. I'm snobby about pizza and proud of that. It's tough to find decent pizza outside of the Tri-State area.

I'm the first person who will go out on a dance floor. I write poetry and should do it more often than I do. I call my parents a few times a week. I'm a social and political progressive and a proud feminist. On weekends with good weather I'm usually out a winery, on a hiking trail or at the pool in the summer. I'm getting back into distance running. I think I'm a mensch.

As the pizza comments may have indicated, I'm from New York originally, in the suburbs of New York City, but I've been in the D.C. area since September 2008. I plan on staying--I love it here.
What I’m doing with my life
I work as an online journalist covering the technology industry and I recently finished getting my MA in international affairs, so I'm looking to do something with that in or out of the government. I like to think about things like this:
I’m really good at
Writing, listening, trivia, telling you why you shouldn't get that smartphone--but should get *that one* instead, suggesting good music to listen to, finding great brunch spots, being there.
The first things people usually notice about me
Physically: My glasses and my smile.
Personality-wise: I'm an attentive listener. I've been told I "give good email."
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
A Bend in the River, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Chronicles: Volume One, The Lord of the Rings, Invisible Man, Light in August, Private Empire, Leaves of Grass, A Peace to End All Peace, The Princess Bride, Manhood for Amateurs, Contact, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Middlesex, The Shadow of the Wind, Station Eleven, Between the World and Me.

Too many to count, but favorites include: There Will be Blood, The Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, Contact, The Shawshank Redemption, Field of Dreams, Fargo, WALL-E, Dr. Strangelove, Up, Blazing Saddles, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Wayne's World, Stranger Than Fiction, Airplane!, French Kiss (for a very sentimental reason), Schindler's List, Pan's Labyrinth, 12 Years a Slave, Moonlight.

TV Shows:
Curb Your Enthusiasm, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, True Detective (well, at least Season 1), The Knick, The Leftovers, The Simpsons, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Last Week Tonight, Parks and Recreation, Breaking Bad, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Stranger Things, Westworld.

Of Monsters and Men, Iron & Wine, MGMT, Bon Iver, Florence + The Machine, Railroad Earth, Jungle, Beaty Heart, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Dave Matthews Band, Disptach, Snow Patrol, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, CSNY, Blood Sweat and Tears, Chicago, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, The Cranberries, Dispatch, Bend Folds Five, U2, the Allman Brothers, Radiohead, Damien Rice.

An amazing cheeseburger; mouth-watering pasta in really creamy vodka-style sauces; warm naan bread; broccolini.
Six things I could never do without
Friends and family don't really count for this exercise:

1. Wonder and awe in life (especially from new knowledge or experiences)
2. Natural beauty (especially the leaves changing color in the fall)
3. Travel (and a valid passport)
4. Good music
5. Reading the news/knowing what's going on in the world (which, these days, necessitates an internet connection)
6. Companionship/contact with others and hopefully laughter therein
I spend a lot of time thinking about
how to be a better writer, a better friend and a better person; New York City history; the stars, and how every atom in our bodies once came from an exploding star. And Betty, she's smokin'.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either out with friends in D.C. (since, curiously, no one likes to hang out in Old Town), or, more likely than not, at home relaxing, perhaps with a glass of wine.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I once had a giant afro. Huge.
You should message me if
this intrigued you and you want to meet. Also, to be totally upfront, I'm looking to date someone with the hope that it will eventually turn into a serious relationship.
The two of us
