My self-summary
ENFP, apparently.
What I’m doing with my life
I got my master's in American lit from the University of Chicago a few years back, and was working in publishing in midtown Manhattan until a year ago. Then I quit my job to move home to the the windswept plains of West Texas. I moved to be near my son and write crime novels.

Things are going well. I've been working freelance for NPR and Esquire magazine, and I don't have a boss or a day job. I spend all day at the coffee shop writing. I'm just finished my fourth novel.

If you want to know about my journey from NYC to TX, you can read this essay I wrote about it:

If you "like" me I will never know it. I don't have the premium membership thing. Just message me and say hi. I'm nice.

I haven't updated my location because I live in a small town, and I feel like it might invite headaches. I travel a lot.

I go to the gym sometimes, or go running. And I eat a lot of peanut m&ms. And I like reading about architecture.
I’m really good at
Alphabetizing stuff. Creating awkward moments. Doing crossword puzzles. Drinking root beer. Eating tacos. Making dorky references. Mentally copyediting subway advertisements. Napping. Recognizing obscure old celebrities.
The first things people usually notice about me
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I have devoted most of my life to books, so that's a hard one. My favorite book is Moby-Dick, I think about that book a lot. And Winesburg, Ohio, which is like a heartbreaking little dollhouse. I also love The Magus, Martin Dressler, The Adventures of Augie March, The Stories of John Cheever, lots of old crime novels like Double Indemnity and The Dain Curse, Hawthorne, Emerson, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Victor Hugo, Patricia Highsmith, Hemingway... Jeez, I dunno... there's a lot. Wait, did I say Willa Cather? I fucking love her.

As far as contemporary novels, I loved Fourth of July Creek, and Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh. And Dennis Lehane can do no wrong.

I like old movies. Especially old musicals, comedies, and noir films from the 30s and 40s. I am desperately in love with Ginger Rogers. I promise, I'm straight.

Here is the best scene from any movie ever:

As far as music goes, I listen to a lot of Coltrane and Mingus and Charlie Parker. I also like Uncle Tupelo. And Bob Wills. And Solomon Burke. Sometimes when I go running I listen to "Wolf Like Me" by TV on the Radio and pretend I'm a werewolf on the loose.

I don't watch much TV. Not being pretentious. I'm just busy. I would watch TV with you if you want.

Food: waffles.
The six things I could never do without
Books made of paper
Things made of wood and metal and glass

Also my son, who is my best friend. He's 12.

On a typical Friday night I am
reading. I know, I'm a square. I got partying out of my system a few years back.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I lost my virginity to a bald girl.
You should message me if
you like stuff, and are not opposed to discussing it.
