My self-summary
I am a scientist by training and inclination. One of my greatest passions is learning. I am fascinated by nearly every topic I encounter, and I find that there is nothing more beautiful than an apt mind. I feel one must approach the world with a sense of humor, and have been accused at times of being a horrible, villainous punster.

I will cheerfully admit to being a nerd, with the social awkwardness that goes with it. Collecting math jokes is something of a hobby of mine, but my humor also includes elements of wit, puns, and a significant dose of general silliness.

I am the deeply devoted faithful servant of a pair of cats as different from one another as it is possible for two cats to be.

I am a liberal, but enjoy discussing politics with others, regardless of similarity or difference in belief. I don't, however, expect a relationship to work out with someone of a conservative mindset.

I adore reading, though more often online than through hard copy.

I enjoy going to see stage productions of musicals. I am also fond of playing computer games, especially of the strategy and RPG variety. When time allows, I am also quite fond of kayaking. I hope to get back in to karate as time and location allow. I enjoy bicycling, camping and hiking, upon occasion, and have had to do each in the process of acquiring my education, though I've not done much of any of them recently. My experiences have given me some great stories to tell, and this, too, brings me joy.

I am introspective, intelligent, and imaginative
What I’m doing with my life
I'm enjoying being a geology instructor at the local community college. Geology rocks, or at the least, it's very gneiss, even though it is often taken for granite. I did warn you about the puns, did I not? I'm not all talc. I actually have quite an apatite for them. I'm known to pyrite them, and while I originally counted my stockpile in quartz, I think it's now fairer to say I have a galena rock and mineral jokes. Maybe that makes me a little wacke, or maybe I'm just jaded. (No, I'm not usually this bad, for which I am sure my students are profoundly grateful).
I’m really good at
Bringing joy to friends and family, learning, reading, listening, making people laugh, expressing myself, and putting together math questions for fun or information.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm not afraid to speak my mind or be different from those around me. Being one face in a crowd is boring. Being the person that everyone remembers five years down the road has been a much more interesting route.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm fond of sci-fi and fantasy above all other categories, but I do also enjoy the broader spectrum of literature. Some of my favorites include the works of David Eddings, Raymond Feist, C. S. Lewis (mostly because I intentionally ignore the metaphor and take the stories literally), Stranger in a Strange Land, Brave New World, the Valdemar Series, the (online) works of Fel, and Khalil Gibran's, "The Prophet".

I am also quite fond of web-comics. Of these, xkcd is by far my favorite. Others I read regularly include Something Positive, Gunnerkrigg Court, Girl Genius, Schlock Mercenary, Questionable Content, Order of the Stick, Least I Could Do, Grrl Power, The Dreamland Chronicles, Alice Grove, and Oglaf (NSFW). I've also read The Phoenix Requiem, DIgger, and a few others which have reached a conclusion.

I don't watch many movies these days, but I enjoy a good comedy or adventure movie. Gore for its own sake is, in my opinion, the makings of a terrible movie. Some of my favorites include The Princess Bride, Avatar, Labyrinth, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Outrageous Fortune, The Court Jester, Flight of Dragons, Willow and Phantom of the Opera.

My favorite shows include Grimm, Castle, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and Sherlock. If we include shows that are no longer running, add The West Wing, and the works of Joss Whedon.

When it comes to music, I'm fairly open, with the exception of rap, which I despise. Some of my favorite genres are 60s-70s rock, anything by Nobou Uematsu, Broadway showtunes, classical music, and opera, but only if I can get the visual experience as well as the audio.

I am an enthusiastic omnivore. I like most things, and I'll try anything once, so long as there aren't serious risks of it affecting my health. I adore Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, Mexican or Chinese food. While I've highlighted certain specific cuisines, I've never found a cuisine I dislike. I'm also fond of cooking, though I enjoy it more as a team sport than as solitaire. I can make a risotto that will knock your socks off.
Six things I could never do without
1. My mind
2. My cats
3. My computer
4. My family
5. My friends
6. My sense of humor
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Life, the universe and everything, but specifically how to use my past and present to better shape the future. Further, I am more in tune with the news than most, and always happy to talk about it. My strongest "more" trait on this site is that I am more political than average.
On a typical Friday night I am
At home, on the computer, reading, writing, chatting, and/or playing games. On a better than typical Friday night, I am hanging out with friends, or going to see a show. On a proactive Friday night, I'm grading.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I've amalgamated personal experience, and, using it, appropriated the Drake equation to predict the odds of two people connecting on this site to form a relationship, assuming one of those two people is me. I also have a general form of the equation. So, just in case the rest of the profile somehow didn't give it away, yes, I'm a nerd ;).
You should message me if
Feel free to message as you like--I don't bite. There are no forbidden topics. If you can't think of one, I'd cordially invite you to check my question explanations for more potential fodder (caveat emptor: I am blunter in those explanations than just about anywhere else in life. I don't believe hiding things makes for a good start to a relationship). There may, hypothetically, be such a thing as too long a message, but I haven't seen it yet, and unless you're Dostoevsky reborn, I don't expect to see it any time soon.

Perhaps it would help if I mentioned what I look for when I decide whether to message someone else. Distance and education are both factors, but not generally deal-breaker factors. I look for a desire to have, or at least willingness to consider, a child at some point, and in some manner. I look for someone who likes, and is not allergic to, cats. I look for someone who is either specifically non-religious, or is not too deeply involved in spiritual matters. By this, I mean that science must come first when it comes to explaining the world around us, and educating the next generation. Finally, I look for those who are politically liberal.

Please do not message me if:
* You idolize Vlad the Impaler, and his method of eliminating poverty
* You have ever seriously attempted to destroy the world (having a good maniacal evil overlord laugh doesn't count)
* You supported Trump. Trump is an abomination. Those who supported him disgrace the name of human, much less American.
* You hate rocks
