...But (if you are still reading) we can chat if you want someone to listen or if you somehow saw past all the geeky stuff in my profile and think it would be interesting to talk with me. Also, according to all my friends, if you like to laugh, you want me around.
I am a World-traveller (by sheer fortunate circumstance) and have been chronicling my international travels through a series of (unfortunately yet-unpublished) children's books. In addition to the U.S.,other countries visited include: Malta, Russia, Jordan, England, Scotland, Turkey, South Africa, Germany and Egypt.
When not engaged in home repair, yard maintenance, quests through flea markets or antique shops, hitting the local trails on one of my vintage bicycles, or just unwinding from the work week, my primary weekend hobby is actively participating in historical reenactments, mostly WWII and Civil War. There are very few Pirate reenactments any more.
For over ten years, I have been heavily engaged in an international effort using science as a bridge to peace in the Middle East. Our group has already accomplished great success that remains unequaled by any other endeavor. So in a list of "What I'm doing with my life," I can honestly (and proudly) say: successfully helping bring about world peace.
...But when I absent-mindedly whistle in public, it usually stops everyone around me, as they are certain it could NOT have been me.
Favorite books... of all time, or just those I have read in recent years? A list would have to include all of Tolkien's works. Favorite authors include Stephen King, Anne Rice, Douglas Adams, C. S. Lewis; my list would be incomplete if I did not add Jack Douglas and e e cummings. I am an avid reader and have an extensive personal library... but the books I most enjoy re-reading are reference books in a wide range of historical (among other) areas of knowledge. I am currently working my way through the Game of Thrones books.
Favorite movies? Again, this list is fluid. The Maltese Falcon," "Casablanca," "Gone With the Wind," "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," as well as Lord of the Rings are among my all-time favorites. I am a huge fan of the Marx Brothers. I particularly enjoy almost every "comic book superhero" movie ever made - but well written / well-acted romantic comedies are A Must. A much shorter and easier list to compile would be Movies I Hate.
My list of Favorite Television Shows would include classics as Star Trek, Get Smart, Mission Impossible, Time Tunnel, and many others from my youth. Favorite BBC classics include The Prisoner, The IT Crowd, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Coupling, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Avengers, The Young Ones. More recent TV favorites are Deadwood, Sopranos, Smallville, Dexter, Buffy, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Six Feet Under.
Favorite music? Just about anything except "thrash rock," Rap and Opera... with the exception of Verdi's "Il Trovatore". I have to mention Motown and Classic Rock (such as faves The Who & Heart) and, of course, the Beatles. My guilty pleasures are Bluegrass as well as bagpipes (but not together!), although I am aware the mere mention of those will alienate most everyone.
Favorite food? Here's how it works: Cooking is a creative art form at which I excel. Since I can modify virtually any recipe to my own tastes, I am able to prepare virtually any dish to my own personal definition of utter perfection -- at least according to my own tastebuds. I often have a hard time deciding in restaurants, because I prefer to order something that (1) I rarely bother cooking because it is overly laborious (i.e. eggs Benedict), or (2) involves ingredients that I never have at home. I am extremely fond of haggis, but the real stuff is illegal to make in the United States.
Guinness is really the only beer I drink - if it's not on tap, then I am usually Designated Driver.
I am a huge fan of stand-up comedy, when it is done right. So, even though they do not fit into any category, I must add George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg and Lewis Black to my list of all-time favorites.
But for practical purposes (and assuming "things" does not include "people") my list would probably include:
-- Comfortable clothing and shoes;
-- Excellent food, especially coupled with good conversation;
-- Paper and (Ticonderoga #2!) pencils to write down and/or sketch the constant ideas that pour out of my head;
-- A bicycle;
-- Peace of Mind", if that is a valid option;
-- The ability to wish for more wishes.
However, as I said, "Never" is such a strong word.
-- You somehow found this artificial online representation of myself to be charming and/or humerous and simply want to send me a friendly word as our lifepaths intersect in perhaps only this one instance.
-- You have found that Very Special Someone and are looking for an ordained minister who can legally marry you. Bonus: I can conduct the ceremony in Klingon, if that's your thiing.
Reminder: IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A DATE, you should keep looking -- I AM UNAVAILABLE! A wonderfully remarkable woman with an incredibly beautiful soul has already snatched me up and has no plans of ever letting me go! I sincerely wish each and every one of you the same luck in finding such a wonderful person in your own life.
