My self-summary
I am a kind & intelligent guy who is very grounded in my family & friends. I love to read and spend part of my time doing community-building work. I am a researcher by profession, but see that as a result of my love of being a student. One of my dreams is to write a novel some day & find a great like-minded person to share the adventures of living. I am also a solid Leftist and a person of religious faith ( a bit of a mystic really). I know this is an odd combination in the US, but if you can't deal with either or both of these things, it's best to connect with other folks than me.
What I’m doing with my life
The only thing I really have to do with my life is use each day to learn and love. The rest is really details. In my case, one of the important details is that I am a cultural & medical anthropologist who specializes in alternative sexual and gender cultures in the US.
I’m really good at
Listening to people and connecting them with good reads and like-minded souls. I love to see my friends connect and build supportive friendships. I'm relentlessly gregarious and a social hub in a way. I notice shy people connect with me easily for some reason. Perhaps because I find them intriguing and know they have an awesome inner life. My sister says I am a collector of people and ideas and never things. Little sisters do have their special
charms and insights after all.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm funny and smart and like to make people feel they are the center of my attention when we talk because they are.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Book: This Bridge Called My Back, Borderlands/La Frontera, Zami, Sister Outsider, Pedagogies of Crossing, Methodolgy of the Oppresed, Love in the Time of War, Stone Butch Blues, Bodies That Matter, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Motion of Light in Water, The Visible & the Invisible, The Kingdom of This World, Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand, Grundrisse, The Phenomenology of the Spirit, & Black Reconstruction. To be perfectly honest, I read books the way some people eat donuts. I am an unreconstructed bibliophile and voracious reader. So, if you cannot appreciate the pleasures of the text, you won't ever get me.
Movies: Casablanca, M, Breathless, To Have & To Have Note, Film Noir, Metropolis, & The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
Shows: Iron Chef
Music: Jazz, Experimental Music, 1970's Salsa, & Bruce Springsteen.
Six things I could never do without

I spend a lot of time thinking about
Writing my first ethnography and my first novel --- in that order. But, I could live with doing it the other way around.
On a typical Friday night I am
I like to relax at home or just go to a lounge.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I once subscribed to the National Review when I was in high school.
You should message me if
You have an open mind, like to think new thoughts, abhor idle chatter, meet my marvelous 8-year-old & 3-year-old nieces (I'm their part-time man servant), believe that the verb form of revolution is love, and would like to try my cooking. You have to share anti-racist, Leftie, LGBTQ sexual/gender liberation, feminist of color, and global/anti-imperialist outlooks and values. Wishy-washy, gentrifying liberals: no thanks. Shared values and utopian desires are really sexy and build beautiful relationships. All power to the people and the imagination. Trump loses in the end. I hope everyone finds love on OKC. God knows we need love in these times.
