My self-summary
"With all my ideas and follies I could one day found a corporate company for the propagation of beautiful but unreliable imaginings." Robert Walser

I am especially attracted to profiles that are rife with self-doubt. Sparkling self-satisfaction is a bit insipid.

If you merged Rogers and Hart, the Pogues, Fred Astaire and Virginia Woolf, I don't think I'd flatter myself to aver that you'd find me, but you'd find some simulacrum of my deep interests and desires.

I think I'm an odd combination of romantic/serious and silly/witty. I switch gears a lot. And I'd like to meet someone who can do that, and whose nuances are full of shadings. I think the mind and body are wildly inventive. I'm not on a search for someone who is restless, rather someone is richly contoured in the imaginative possibilities of thinking, loving.

I like people who understand their wounds, have meditated on and mediated their flaws without having tried to sugarcoat them, or make them completely disappear. I tend to respond to people who are highly self-aware. And whose sense of self has led them to higher ground: trustworthiness, kindness, respectfulness. None of which precludes any of life's grand possibilities.

I'm an emotional and intellectual wayfarer, looking for a companion. Adventure, as Dorothy noted, can be had very close by (Toto, I don't think we're in Chicago anymore . . . ), in cities, in talks, on streets . . . not that I'm averse to Paris. I like to talk and walk, dine. I adore my son. I could list my laundries of artists, directors, composers, etc. More fun to talk about them.

I like eye contact that's sly, sharp and caressing.

I'm looking for an intellectual adventurer, a sensual instigator, an emotional fellow-traveler with a great sense of play, a innate sense of compassion. Would you want me to ask for less?

When the rhythm calls
The government falls
Here come the cops
From Tokyo to Soweto, viva la musica pop

We are black and white
And we dance all night down at the hop
And the letters were tall
On the Berlin Wall, viva la musica pop

So if you're feeling low, stuck in some bardo
I, even I know the solution
Love, music, wine and revolution
Love, love, love music, wine and revolution

This too shall pass
So raise your glass to change and chance
And freedom is the only law
Shall we dance?

And freedom is the only law
Shall we dance?

So if you're feeling low, stuck in some bardo
I, even I know the solution

So if you're feeling low, stuck in some Bordeaux
I, even I, know the solution
Love, music, wine and revolution

The Magnetic Fields - World Love
What I’m doing with my life
Writer/professor/editor

Trying to balance sincerity and irony
I’m really good at
talking about things that seem to matter to me--listening to what seems to matter to the person I'm talking to.
The first things people usually notice about me
I look like a combination of Betty Hutton in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek and Edward Everett Horton in The Gay Divorcee.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
music; literature: pick your genre, I'm a writer; talking seriously with affectionate banter; traveling; films noir, musicals, Hitchcock, movies; visual art; seeking charming moments; trying to delight. I love being by water.

(Have you noticed that everybody loves Leonard Cohen now. It's really depressing.)
The six things I could never do without
My son, love, friends, work, Judy Holliday, Fred Astaire.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What brought me here, to this moment.
On a typical Friday night I am
. . . hopefully.

being charmed as the sidekick to a twelve year old combination of Chico Marx and Jackie Cooper.

or at the movies.

or feverishly trying to catch up on some writing project.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Divine kissed me on the forehead at Studio 54.
You should message me if
You run away from cant and cliche and desire intimacy, joy, the unexpected close to home.

Your profile doesn't mention your glass being half-full or half-empty; in fact, if your profile doesn't mention glasses at all, other than spectacles. I'm fond of spectacles (insert Groucho saying, "Are those spectacles? Feel free to make a spectacle of yourself").

You like The Magnetic Fields or Laura Nyro.

You're interested in la belle, la perfectly swell romance, and may even know where that line comes from
