My self-summary
I am currently just looking for friendship. I am looking for conversation partners, climbing partners, board game partners, music partners – friends.

Do you believe it is possible for humans to communicate with non-humans? Not metaphorically, literally: do you believe, for example, that it is possible for a human to have a conversation with a tree? A boulder? A river?

I love learning, reading, and discussing. I love the sound of rain. I love listening to and talking with rocks and trees.

I recently googled my username, CooperRL, to find the results dominated by an instagram user with a) the same username as me and b) an evidently very strong interest in marijuana. He calls his instagram profile his "hashadashery," and his banner reads "Living the dream. Hashing it out daily and staying miles higher."

Now, I don't know who this pottleganger is, but it is not me. I'm not the type of guy to object to marijuana, but I'm also not the type of guy to make an instagram page with 601 photographs of my marijuana plants and buds. If I were to make an instagram page, I would strictly limit myself to a maximum of 500 marijuana-related photos. That's just how I was raised.

Update: I no longer see this Instagram page when I google my username. Perhaps Instagram took it down.

I like the vision of relationships codified in The Relationship Bill of Rights:

What do you think?

Regarding OKCupid's questions, I only answer the ones that are important to me.
What I’m doing with my life
I am a teacher and a writer. I work for Kaplan Test Prep, teaching adults how to take the LSAT, GRE, and GMAT, and teaching high school students how to take the SAT and ACT. I write all kinds of different things.

I play the guitar, the tenor saxophone, and the soprano saxophone.
I’m really good at
I'm good at thinking carefully. I'm good at teaching and discussing with enthusiasm. I try to listen to understand rather than to respond.
The first things people usually notice about me
No doubt they're impressed by my hair and my choice in frames.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I love Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood. I love everything by Jorge Luis Borges. I love radical cultural criticism, Derrick Jensen, for example. I am currently reading White Teeth, by Zadie Smith, and Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, by Kevin Bales.

My favorite films include The Prestige, The Fountain, and Airplane.

I like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Portlandia.

My favorite album is called Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull. I recently got to see Ian Anderson perform the full album, front to back, for the first time since 1972. I also like Led Zeppelin, Joe Bonamassa, Tool, and The Mars Volta. I love jazz: some of my favorite performers are Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins.

I love most cuisines. I enjoy cooking for myself.
Six things I could never do without

A notebook and a pencil

My family

My house is my favorite place. It is beautiful here.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I think about what makes good fiction, what makes a good life, and how to be a better teacher. I think about the United States culture and its problems.
