"...I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like... Books, records, films -- these things matter. Call me shallow but it's the fuckin' truth, and by this measure I was having one of the best dates of my life."
Calm down Rob Gordon... I get that you're attractive and your tastes are fantastic but really, you are a mess and I'm not as into you as I was once upon a time ago. Editors note: Re-watched my favorite movie again tonight and reflecting on it yet again remember why I love this character... and hate him at the same time.
That said, the following are great things to share in common or not but are not at the end of the day complete deal breakers if we don't agree. Unless your taste is THAT horrendous.. a girl has to have standards you know. It just makes the causal conversations in between a bit easier from time to time.
Everywhere, nowhere and (often) the in between. To get a little idea of what's on the other side of the looking glass you can check out this semi inaccurate sampling here: I tend to have music on nearly constantly whenever possible.
Some bands off the top of my head: Korea Girl, Flogging Molly, Against Me!, The Books, Weezer, Coco Rosie, City and Colour, The Petrojvic Blasting Company, Lykki Li, The Cardigans, Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Postal Service, The Blow, Iron & Wine, Her Space Holiday,Garbage, Mates of State, Saosin, The Dandelion Council, Etta James, Tegan and Sarah, The Pixies, Goldfrapp, Beirut, Rilo Kiley, Kaiser Chiefs, The Beatles, Daft Punk, Social Distortion, Tim Armstrong, Jem, The Raveonettes, Harry Connick Jr, Frank Sinatra, Hole, The Decemberists, Deathcab for Cutie, Jolie Holland, Voxtrot, Lit, Eve 6, Everclear, The Smiths, U2, The Maccabees, Journey (No there doesn't need to be booze involved tyvm),Radiohead, Cut Copy, Depeche Mode, Mirah, The Murmers, Jack Johnson, LCD Soundsystem, Sparklehorse, Garbage, Bon Iver Unwritten Law, Dashboard Confessional, Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, The Shins, The Kooks, Blink 182 Foo Fighters, Keane, Kent, Mogwai, Travis
and the list goes on. I love a wide variety of music and sound from multiple eras. Do you too? Send me some music. The more obscure the better. One minute I may be in the mood for jazz or 90s alternative rock, another I could be dabbling into modern folk & surf style music, another lo-fi, another pop punk, another experimental or noise, etcetera etcetera. (Yes there is a genre called noise- and it's highly fascinating.) Oh but I rarely can stand listening to rap, screamo, garage metal or club music for too long at a time. Seriously I'm not sure how some people do it.
Books: The Catcher in the Rye, Lolita, works by Vonnegut, HP Lovecraft, Emerson and Palanuik, and Various other poets such as Poe, Rilke, and Rumi.
High Fidelity, Spaceballs,Breakfast at Tiffanys, Heathers, Amélie,Evil Dead 2, Labyrinth, Army of Darkness,Trainspotting, Life with Brian, Gattaca, Coraline, Reality Bites, Donnie Darko, The Neverending Story, Beginning of the End, Dr Horribles Sing Along Blog, Funny Face, Charade, Sabrina, Wargames, Young Frankenstein, Ferris Bueller's Day off, Real Genius, November, Dream for an Insomniac, Requiem for a Dream, Night of the Living Dead, A Pyromaniac's Love Story, Friday the 13th, (insert random B Horror Movie here), Unbreakable, The Station Agent, The Fifth Element, The Italian Job, Resident Evil, Batman Returns, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Naked Gun, Chasing Amy, Burton Films with the exception of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (Im biased towards the original with Gene Wilder), Airplane, Major League, Field of Dreams, Clockwork Orange The Birds & anything Hitchcock or Kubrick actually, Memento, The Butterfly Effect
this list is far too long so let's put it this way: if you like awesome movies that require intelligence- and some that don't but aren't just fart jokes and swearing, tell me about it.
Archer, Pan Am, Madmen, Big Bang Theory, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Police Squad, Twin Peaks, House, Law & Order: SVU, Robot Chicken, Futurama, Mission Hill, Absolutely Fabulous, Mr. Bean, Pee Wee's Playhouse, and of course I'm a sucker for both the old Batman tv series from the 60s & the Spiderman cartoons. Because well, that was a given. My dad reminded me this weekend of the old Captain America ones too. Ah watching the big shield vs the Red Skull. Memories.
I recently was informed about the show Smack the Pony which if you haven't seen... is ah-maze-ing.
Assorted cartoons of awesome: Happy Tree Friends, Spongebob, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Bobbys World, Heathcliff, Aaaah! Real Monsters, Felix the Cat, anything on Mtv's Oddities... Who says just because you grow up you have to stop watching? Psh.
Food: Yakiniku , Indian, Sushi, Dim sum, Mongolian BBQ, malasadas, cupcakes (I love to bake. It's better when I have people to share it with however.), Tacos, Seafood, fresh fruit
However the following things below are what carry me through my days: passion/goals to strive for, great friends/inspiring people, music in various forms from the standard to laughter to clicking keys to train whistles and bustling street corners, and equal measures of silence
It's... a bit mind boggling.
I've sadly had multiple stalkers due to Okcupid and therefore you might have seen two of me at one point. At first this was to avoid further stalkery but then turned into a(n ongoing) social experiment of sorts. Let's just say that I take a huge notice of the messages I receive here vs elsewhere.
That said I used to be more public with some of my private life, but those days are gone now. Moments are meant to be legendary. Really, truly, legendary.
And lately I've been hanging out a lot on Crushee: http://crushee.com/users/scandalous
I'm at a point in my life where I want to be surrounded by people (friends and/or lovers) that intellectually & emotionally stimulate me. I want someone who's going to be my sidekick. Someone that I'm going to lose days just being with. Someone that is alright if we don't see each other for a few days.
I want a balance of passion, stability and madness. Because falling is dangerous... literally & figuratively.
To quote one of my favorite movies (Dream for an Insomniac):
"There are too many mediocre things in life and love shouldn't be one of them."
*You have no expectations and just want to let things happen. With time and patience and a balance. Because sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the rush of would be more long lasting passions. Friendships need their time to grow and so do romances- lest they all end tragically. (Note: this is not to say that I am closed off entirely to the concept of dating. It means that I'd like to build from a friendship and then see what happens.)
*You rock can rock a suit and not feel out of place or uncomfortable in it. Lately this is a major plus. I'm ALL about the suits these days.
*You enjoy fancy places and dive bars in equal measure.
*You love to travel or feel compelled to give someone your airline miles. You want to send a girl a postcard with something you're too chicken to send to Post Secret.
*You want to show me some really great music/movies/book quotes/books/art/ historical secrets of downtown. (I'm very much on hitting up fancy old and hidden places lately. Major bonus points if you adore the history of this great city and want to explore it with me as well. Extra points if it's somewhere I haven't already been.)
*You are not only after sex. I want something meaningful, tangible and real. I repeat, if you are not only after sex because I want something that's built to last and not just for the night.
*You are a positive and optimistic person. You don't have to be super successful career wise, but you have to be happy, have goals that you are working towards, ambitions, and passions.
*You are intellectually stimulating and can hold your end of the conversation. (Being attractive outwardly means little to nothing with me if you can't keep up with me on charm and rapier wit.) Bonus points if you are also capable of being content with moments of silence & you are an effective nonverbal communicator.
*You love being digitally disconnected.
And, MOST IMPORTANTLY
*You can maintain a degree of sanity despite all of it.
"What I want is to be needed. What I need is to be indispensable to somebody. Who I need is somebody that will eat up all my free time, my ego, my attention. Somebody addicted to me. A mutual addiction."
- Chuck Palahniuk
But I don't NEED any of that... ;)
*And lastly if you fit the bill of this, that'd be fanfreakintastic.
