My self-summary
I'm an Ohio transplant who has found his soul's home by the shores of Lake Merritt. I'm a dry, sarcastic, atheist skeptic, but a secret romantic at heart.

Note: so, my current marriage is ending. To quote Kurt Vonnegut: so it goes. The good news, for you, is that 1.) I've had the experience of a long-term relationship, and 2.) I am on the market for a new one. The possibly bad news is: in theory, I should probably have a low-key, short-term relationship or two during my "rebound" phase. But that's not normally my speed. Anyway, we'll see what happens, right?
What I’m doing with my life
Woof. Trying to figure out how to answer this question, mainly.
I’m really good at
Crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, conversation, empathy, kissing, advice, acting (Shakespeare is a specialty).
The first things people usually notice about me
That I am very self-contained. I choose my words and actions carefully.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
WAY too many to mention. But I would highlight Moby Dick, Tolkien, Neal Stephenson, Terry Pratchett, Iain M. Banks, Donald Westlake, Red Mars, and Infinite Jest. I also am interested in non-fiction, particularly history. I've read a lot about 16th-century Europe, and also a lot about recent, non-Western history (Cambodia, Vietnam, China, the Congo).

The Ice Storm, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Gerry, Help!, The Great Muppet Caper, The Princess Bride, Ratatouille, Idiocracy, Brothers of the Head, Star Wars (original trilogy, natch), The Big Lebowski, Pi, The Fountain, Cradle Will Rock (super bonus points for anybody else that likes that one). I also love the Toronto Film Festival; if you've never been, make time for yourself early some September and go, you won't regret it.

My three favorite East Bay restaurants are Boot and Shoe Service, Spice Monkey, and Ahn's Quarter Pound Burger

I'm also into "German-style" board games, i.e., Puerto Rico, Settlers of Catan, Age of Renaissance, Diplomacy.

I'm not that into music these days. I mean, there's music I like, and I can come up with some examples if you want, but it's honestly something I don't think much about. What I DO like is dancing to music, all sexy-like. I'm not a particularly good dancer, but I'm enthusiastic, which as far as I can tell is pretty much all that matters.
Six things I could never do without
My wife
The internet
The Saturday New York Times Crossword
The cool damp embrace of the Bay Area
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Politics, philosophy. The nature of free will in a scientific universe.
On a typical Friday night I am
At The Heart and Dagger
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My first girlfriend turned into the moon.
You should message me if
you have ever considered doing so. It's worth it!
