My self-summary
Composer/musician/teacher. Loves music, bicycles, motorcycles, languages, crossword puzzles, NPR, comedy, movies, maps, geography, LPs, camping.

I'm originally from Northwest Arkansas. I've lived in Baltimore for nine years.

I'm unique, just like everyone else.
What I’m doing with my life
Teaching music theory at Johns Hopkins, writing music. I guess see above... Finishing my doctorate in music composition at The Peabody Conservatory.
I’m really good at
Again, crossword puzzles, making up and finishing limericks (I have Carl Kasell's voice as my voicemail, from the "Limerick Challenge" on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!), trivia. Long distance bicycling, I'm not fast, but I like touring. I have twice ridden from Baltimore to my parents' house in Arkansas, once a southern route and once a more northern route that also included riding to New York first. I hope to one day cross the whole country. Snow skiing, but not water. My older sister and her husband have nicknamed me RIG, which stands for random information guy. Apparently I am a fount of random dates, names, and facts. And actually I'm really good at being overly modest. The art of motorcycle mechanics, but no zen.
The first things people usually notice about me
My beard, if I have one. When combined with my usual hat, people often say I look like the Gorton's fisherman captain.

I usually say what's on my mind, without regard for appropriateness.

I'm working on calling people out for their offensive language. Not dirty language, but impolite things.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Confucius' The Analects, Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth, Rilke poetry, Soundings: Music in the Twentieth Century by Glenn Watkins, Giacinto Scelsi: Viaggio al Centro del Suono, Borges, Cortazar

Movies: 8 & 1/2, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shawshank Redemption, Moon, Flame & Citron, Amelie, The Silence of the Lambs, Coen brothers, Charlie Kaufman

Shows: Arrested Development, The X-Files, Weeds, Dexter, Law & Order, 24, The Wire, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Pawn Stars, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead. No TV for ten years + Netflix... I need to add Breaking Bad and Wilfred.

Music: Mahler, Scelsi, Berg, Nørgård, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, Messiaen, Lutosławski, Ligeti, Berio, Bach, Shostakovich, Sibelius. Too many composers to list, that is, I feel like people are douche bags when they list a ton of names to seem like they're really smart because they know people/artists/names that other people haven't heard of, so I'll just stop there. And then some non classical stuff: Björk, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nellie Mckay, Rilo Kiley, Kurt Weill, Fats Waller, Rainer Maria, Arcade Fire, Tim Minchin

Food: Thai, Indian, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, peanut butter
The six things I could never do without
Music, internet, boxer briefs, second computer monitor, hand sanitizer, something to keep my mind occupied.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
finishing my degree.
On a typical Friday night I am
myself.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Why would I include that here of all places?

I have not, nor am I likely to ever see Dirty Dancing.
You should message me if
you want?

...you're intelligent, well-educated, cute, funny, and kind.

...you know anything about the composers listed above, or the bands. But I would be way more impressed with composer information.

...you agree that moustache paraphernalia and "Keep Calm and..." signs have got to go.
