My self-summary
Good day! Thank you for visiting my profile :). To start off with – my name is R.V. (yes…like Recreational Vehicle - lol).

I am a geek who is a little eccentric and definitely a “character” but I will never embarrass myself or others. I don’t take myself too seriously. My sense of humor ranges from being a sarcastic smart-ass to really dry wit – but I never use my humor at the expense of another person.

I tend to be a little introverted in very large crowds as I prefer talking with other people either one-on-one or in a small group. I am fortunate to have a few very close friends who are my family. Those who know me best would describe me as very down to earth and a kind person with a big heart and sensitive. I am not pretentious and I do not judge other people.

I enjoy talking about politics and world events as I’m a NPR/BBC junkie. I am politically/socially liberal and very open to new ideas and ways of thinking. I genuinely believe that people have the right to their opinion although I may not agree with what they believe.
What I’m doing with my life
I’m a PhD candidate at NC State in Sociology and very close to finishing and defending my dissertation. I work full-time doing research for a small research center. What happens next in life, to a certain extent, is a matter of opportunity and random chance. Ideally, I would like to continue my career in applied research.
I’m really good at
A friend suggested that I use “Databulldog” as my profile name. The short of the story – I do not easily give up when I am working on research or analyzing data.

I’m really good at listening to people. I do not mean just hearing a person talk – I mean really listening and understanding the importance of what someone is saying. If I am asked my opinion or perspective, I do my best be bluntly honest and tactful at the same time.
The first things people usually notice about me
I embrace male pattern baldness as I shave my head. Perched either on my nose or on top of my head are my dark prescription glasses. Usually (but not always) I’m fidgeting with my blond/brown/grey goatee/mustache when I am thinking.

I’m something of a rarity in Raleigh as I am a native of North Carolina. I am originally from the Asheville area and attended Appalachian State in Boone. People tend to notice my Southern Appalachia accent.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I enjoy Sci-Fi, Drama, Comedies, Horror, Documentaries….

I like a wide range of music: Orbital, Bach, Techno, Moby, Johnny Cash, Beethoven, Industrial, Jazz and Blues, Ray Charles, bagpipes, Pop, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Dave Mathews……….

I enjoy a diversity of food and I am willing to try any new food once. I also really like to cook!
The six things I could never do without
A laptop
My truck
Good beer
Engaging conversation
“Down” time
I spend a lot of time thinking about
When I am not thinking about my dissertation research – I spend a lot of time thinking about the sources of inequality and how inequality (like race, gender, space) impact access to health care and health policy. I think a lot about the social construction of family and how past experiences in childhood impact people as adults. I also think about life after I complete my PhD.
On a typical Friday night I am
Honestly, I might have dinner and drinks with friends. I might work late at the office. I might go to a movie with myself. I might simply go home, drink an ale or two, watch Netflix, and hang out with my dog and cat. Whatever I decide to do – I do my best to relax after a long week.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Hmmmm, I prefer to admit something private about myself once I get to know someone ;)
You should message me if
You are a woman. Your race, nationality, body type, or any other ambiguous social labels do not matter to me.

What matters is that you are a progressive thinker, down to earth, want to share new experiences, and enjoy good ales or a glass of wine.
