My self-summary
Tall, dark and presentable, interested in a million things and looking for smart, attractive, engaging companions with a sense of humor and a taste for exploring all that life in Los Angeles has to offer for those interested in doing so.
I have a lot of friends and enjoy art galleries, live concerts, author lectures and much, much else, not to mention a drink and great conversation at a cool bar or restaurant. I love to cook, give an awesome massage, and can carry a conversation on about any topic.
I have two kids now on their way in the world, more or less, as young adults, and I'm free to do what I like, though I still spend a lot of time with them when they can work me into their busy lives.
What I’m doing with my life
These days, I'm a columnist writing about tech and entertainment/media, a ghostwriter and a communications/social media consultant. I have two wonderful grown kids, and am living the life of a single man vigorously exploring the world with joy and curiosity and energy.
I’m really good at
Writing, conversation, cooking, massage, noticing what's going on around me, listening to what people are saying. Before my knees went the way of the carrier pigeon and the dodo, I was a good all-around athlete. I still enjoy hiking, biking and walking, and shooting around on a basketball court.
The first things people usually notice about me
I have big green eyes that some people notice and comment about. I'm about 6'3", have a shock of blessedly still plentiful white hair and am pretty outgoing in social situations, so I can be hard to miss.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I've enjoyed deeply and consistently the books of Joseph Conrad, Nick Hornby, Bruce Chatwin, W.G. Sebald, David Sedaris, Oliver Sacks, Richard Dawkins, Steven Jay Gould, Edith Wharton, Charles Dickens, Neal Stephenson and William Gibson, among others, though I tend more toward non-fiction when I read book-length material. Generally, I'm a voracious reader of magazines, newspapers and online news sources, including the New Yorker, Wired, Wall Street Journal, other newspapers, political magazines, Granta, lots else, especially now that I can carry around so much stuff so conveniently on my iPad.

I'm not a huge TV watcher, but enjoy watching sports (my version of reality TV) while I'm reading something, and have enjoyed many of the more intelligent and interesting hour-long dramas of recent times. I'll occasionally go on a viewing binge on Netflix or Amazon Prime. If you have shows you watch, even if I'm not into them, I'm sure I can entertain myself just fine with something to read while curled up with you on the couch.

I'm a MASSIVE music fan, with hundreds of CDs (and now thousands of digital tracks) from a wide variety of genres both current and long past.
All-time faves include: Miles Davis, Neil Young, Prince, New Order, The Replacements, U2, Radiohead, Dead Can Dance, Coldplay, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, John Coltrane, Charlie Haden, The Clash, Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Fela Kuti, Beth Orton, Billie Holliday, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Aster Piazzolla, Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn, Cassandra Wilson, Cesaria Evora, Husker Du, Los Lobos, The Band, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Midnight Oil, Moby, English Beat, Everything But the Girl, Thievery Corporate, Groove Armada, Flaming Lips, John Martyn, Frank Sinatra, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Rufus Wainwright, Lyle Lovett, Marvin Gaye, Steely Dan, Massive Attack, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nick Drake, Paul Simon, Pete Yorn, Portishead, R.E.M., Randy Newman, Tears For Fears, Rolling Stones, Shelby Lynne, Sly and the Family Stone, The Smiths, Sparklehorse, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Warren Zevon, Wilco, Willie Nelson, World Party, and Zero 7.

Recent much-loved bands include Ray LaMontagne, Warpaint, Dawes, Bright Eyes, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend, Snow Patrol, Fitz and the Tantrums, Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Adele, everything Danger Mouse does, Shins, John Legend, Death Cab for Cutie, DJ Shadow, Spoon, Keane, Travis, Keren Ann, Elbow, Magnetic Fields, My Morning Jacket and Nick Cave, among so much else.

I'm a long-time KCRW supporter, so I keep pretty up to date on interesting music through that and my own peregrinations across the Internet.

As for food, I'm an omnivore who appreciates many kinds of food and styles of cooking. I enjoy eating out, whether in a fancy place or a dive ethnic joint. I also enjoy cooking a LOT, but prefer to do it for/with someone. It's a very nurturing and satisfying thing to make a great meal for someone and enjoy it together, ideally with a nice bottle of wine or some exotic cocktail I've conjured up.
Six things I could never do without
Seems silly in a world where so many have so little to talk about the things I couldn't do without, but in the general spirit of the question: music, my iPad with a good wireless connection, art, sports, sensuality, a beautiful day, a stimulating conversation with a stimulating companion. I'm not a big "thing" guy, though I have more than enough things, and am trying to carve down how many of them I have.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Everything under the sun. I'm interested in ideas and the new, a leftover of my decades as a journalist. I'm still interested in talking about/thinking about/learning about/trying just about anything. And finding someone else who's interested in sharing the conversations and experiences would be a very, very good thing.
On a typical Friday night I am
Out and about. I go to a lot of art gallery and museum events; author lectures and discussion panels; concerts; movies, drinks with friends; and more. And I'm always open to suggestions for more interesting things to do, especially with a fetching and fascinating companion.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
On here? Not much. I tend to keep my counsel, like a good Scorpio. But you may find yourself opening up when we talk, and telling me a LOT about yourself. I'm interested in the lives and stories of others, and people usually share, to my great delight and vast interest.
You should message me if
Any of this resonates for you. I enjoy people, and not just those I might get into a long-term relationship with. Having more friends is never a bad thing, though having a great and passionate long-term lover is a VERY good thing.
