I'm a positive, laid back person, who enjoys life, and can find humor in just about everything. I value honesty and trust above all things.
My parents were both academics, both with PhD's, so I come from a well schooled background, a long line of scientists, philosophers, educators. But I was always more the creative type. My father used to say about me, "He marches to a different drummer, and it's the drummer from Guns N' Roses." He was probably right.
On days when I work from home, I usually have one of the Discovery Channels or the History Channel on all day in the background while I'm working, and when I'm in the car, it's usually NPR. So if the fate of the world ever depends on my knowing the answer to a trivia question, you can rest assured I'll save the day. :)
By the way, I tend to think in movie quotes. So if we're talking, and I happen to say something like "Inconceivable!" or ask you if you have six fingers on your right hand, and you know what I'm talking about, you will have scored major points.
My career work is in the digital arts. I do production sound for movies, I create artwork for video games, I do graphic design, illustration, audio/video post production, and other digital arts services, for various clients. It's all incredibly enjoyable work. I really love it.
In between gigs and projects, I also work a sales job. While I can't say I love that so much, it does have its pluses. It's relatively low stress, steady work, which is a great thing to have. And since it (quite deliberately) has absolutely nothing to do with my primary work, I get to forget all about it when I get home, which is awesome.
I'm also a musician. I play guitar in a band, and play a few other instruments as well.
In addition to playing instruments, I also create them. I enjoy building guitars, entirely from scratch, in my home wood shop.
(Quick FYI: Since I mentioned I work on movies, I'd like to get one thing straight. Yes, I do work with Hollywood people, but no, I'm not here to be used, just because you think dating me might further your acting career. If that's all you're looking for, there are plenty of sleazy agents out there with sweat-stained casting couches, who would be more than happy to hear from you. None of them are me. I'm looking for something real. Hopefully, you are, too.)
My friends have learned to be careful what they say around me, as I've got a habit of finding comedy gold in what comes out of people's mouths. Hey, inspiration strikes where it may. I can't help it if people say silly things all day long.
3D modeling, texturing, drawing & illustration, graphic design
Production sound mixing, recording, sound editing
I was a music major the first time I went to college. I play several instruments. Guitar is my main.
If you enjoy good food, you and I will get along just fine. I love to cook, especially for others. Whether it's something exotic like Thai, Chinese, or Japanese, or something closer to home like a good bowl of chili, I've never steered anyone wrong when it comes to great food.
Woodworking and luthiery:
I build guitars from scratch in my home wood shop. It's an expensive hobby, but very rewarding.
Actually, my hair is the source of my super powers, so I can't cut it.
Hair length aside, a lot of people tell me I have nice eyes. I'll take their word for it.
Personality wise, I'd say the first things people tend to notice are that I'm usually pretty calm and laid back, I'm articulate, and I like to make people laugh.
I love nearly all kinds of music, from classical to classic rock, from jazz to metal. My first love has always been metal bands with really great guitar players, like Ozzy (Randy Rhoads was god!), older Helloween, Satriani, etc., but my tastes are pretty diverse. On any given day, you might catch me listening to Beethoven one moment, Springsteen the next, Coltrane after that, and maybe on to some Iron Maiden from there. It's all good.
I'm a big Stephen King fan. There's just something about the way that man weaves a tale. It really doesn't matter what it is, could be a recipe for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and he'd find a way to make it compelling. My favorite of his works is Wizard and Glass, from the Dark Tower series, but I've loved almost everything he's ever written.
I'm a bit of a sci-fi geek (OK, more than a bit), so Timothy Zahn and Frank Herbert are favorite authors as well.
And of course, can't forget Tolkein.
Is it less than manly of me to admit I've read all seven Harry Potter books, and loved them all?
I also enjoy comics and graphic novels. Watchmen is one of my all time favorite books. The movie was awesome if you're a fan, but I can see why a lot of people who hadn't read the book didn't quite get it.
I'm a HUGE movie lover (and I don't just say that because a good chunk of my living comes from making them). I could spend all day, and then some, listing my favorites. I'll try and limit this to just a few off the top of my head:
Harvey, Interview with the Vampire, Legends of the Fall, Princess Bride, the original Star Wars trilogy (NOT the new ones! I usually just pretend those don't exist. Life's happier that way.), Lord of the Rings, Aliens, Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects, Pulp Fiction, Wrath of Kahn, Fight Club
I'd better stop there. I really could go on all day with this.
Again, I could go on all day. I've got a long list of favorites, from modern shows, all the way back to the invention of TV itself. Here's a small sampling. I'll try to keep it relatively modern:
Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Spartacus, True Blood, Farscape, Boston Legal, Mythbusters, just about anything on the History Channel or Science Channel
I love really spicy foods, the hotter the better. Having said that, my tastes are quite diverse. Here's a small sampling of favorites:
Japanese - I LOVE sushi!
Thai - A really good Panang curry just may be one of the few foods on this planet that I'd consider to be worth its weight in gold.
Korean - Korea House in Williamsville is one of my favorite places. I've learned not to argue with the old woman who waits tables. She won't let me order anything not authentic, and she's ALWAYS right about what's good.
Chinese - And I don't mean the buffet.
Good pizza - I grew up in the NYC area, so when I say "good pizza", I mean GOOD pizza, not the mushy greasy stand-in that far too many places around here serve. Yes, I'm a pizza snob, and proud of it. :)
Duff's wings - This is one of the things that makes living around here worthwhile.
Italian - Carraba's Calamari Ricardo is to die for.
Sushi & other great foods
Friends, family, & love
That's five. I'm actively seeking volunteers to become number six. :)
