My self-summary
I'm recently returned to NC (guys, it turns out it's really cold up North) and trying to get settled in in Raleigh. "High-functioning nerd," "political junkie," and "dry wit" are all phrases that, deservedly or not, get thrown in my direction. Oh, and I'm not kidding about the political junkie thing. Being a Liberal and a Democrat is a major part of my identity, so if you find talking politics tedious then I'll be tedious from time to time. Sorry, but that's just how I roll.

It's now apparent to me that I don't know how to approach writing these sorts of things, so I'm going to throw out some random adjectives and descriptions of myself. I'm usually reserved or even laconic at first, but that stops once I get comfortable with the people I'm talking to or the things I'm talking about. I play the trombone. I'm more of a cat person than a dog person, but I love my parent's rescued mutt and anxiously await the day that my living situation will allow me to get a pet or two. I used to think that I couldn't live without Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Fortunately I was wrong about that, but I'm still bummed out. I think that The Office jumped the shark after season 4. I have a twin brother, but will leave the question of whether one of us is evil, and if so which one, as an exercise for the reader.

P.S.: If you enjoy Bridge or Lords of Waterdeep, you might already be my favorite person.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a new lawyer doing contract work. The NC Bar I'll do immediately; an associate position will take a little while.
I’m really good at
Written argument. Spoken argument. Card games, board games, and other stuff like that. Keeping things in perspective.
The first things people usually notice about me
I say "y'all" but don't have an accent. People that notice this usually then notice that I have an opinion about second person pronouns in English.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I hate ranking these sorts of things, but I've been reading The Warmth of Other Suns and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men recently. I'm unhappy that I haven't gotten my hands on the latest season of Fargo or Archer. I love, in no particular order, The Wire, A Song of Ice and Fire, Arrested Development, Indian food, Dr. Strangelove, Radiohead, good history books, The Wire, my daily political blog fix, Firefly, Battle of Algiers, Ben Folds, The Wire, and all sorts of other things that won't fit or that I've forgotten.
The six things I could never do without
Books
Good things to read that aren't books
Friends, family, and loved ones
Having living green things nearby
Silly lists
My laptop. I just can't quit the internet
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Ghost horses. How I would have cross examined Jay at Adnan's trial. Whether or not Hamilton can possibly be as good as the internet assures me it is.
On a typical Friday night I am
In my fantasy world, I'm usually out having a couple of drinks with some my peeps, watching a movie, playing cards, or just hanging out with friends. In the harsh light of reality, I'm studying or chilling to recover from work at least as often as any of the cool stuff from the first sentence.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm enough of a narcissist that I sometimes think about how to get on my favorite podcasts. So If you and I get to know each other, we should try to have some sort of weird dispute that only Judge John Hodgman can settle. Like maybe one of us could really want to live in a Yurt, except they already did that dispute and also I have no interest in living in a Yurt. It's difficult.
You should message me if
You want to talk to me.
