My self-summary
Just moved back to Atlanta after 2 years in Memphis.

I've ceased to be defined by what I do. I've been an actor, a technical director, a teacher, a waiter, a pretend scientist, a legal assistant, and a financial office drone. I'm currently working on becoming a stand-up comic. None of those things define me but they are all parts of me.

I'm not what you'd call athletic, but I like taking walks, playing frisbee, and camping. I play a mediocre game of ping pong.

I can build things.

I'm generally liberal, but I like everyone, even conservatives, although I may provoke you. Although we won't click if you're a teabagger.

I don't like things ironically. I just go ahead and like them honestly.

I'm trying to teach myself how to cook, slowly but surely.

I sometimes break out into song.

I like to read aloud, and can do excellent character voices.

I can be kinda geeky, but I know how to behave in public.

I'm kinda over the whole zombie thing that's been going around.

I'm putting off more important work by doing this thing.

I can talk for hours, but I can also listen for hours.

I'm bothered that all these sentences start with "I", but by now it's a theme, so I should probably run with it.

I like vanilla but also like trying the other 31 flavors. Variety is key.

I like finding the art in pop culture, mainly to annoy the pretentious.

I pronounce the "t" in exactly.

I once shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.

I like writing explanations to questions on here, so that's probably the best place to get a real insight into me.

I am magnanimous, mercurial, and megagaltastic
What I’m doing with my life
Savoring it. Living it. Building it. Laughing at it. Mocking it when it isn't looking. Surveying new directions because there is nothing as enticing as possibility. Finding that magic line between ambition and contentment. Trying to find a style of vulnerability that isn't construed as weakness or foolishness. Toying with becoming cynical, but just finding the whole thing unpleasant.
I’m really good at
Making people laugh. Sometimes even intentionally.

Finding the best in people and bringing it out.

Remaining calm in a bad situation.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm not attractive enough or hideous enough to stand out usually.

When people notice me, it's usually because I say or do something brilliant or ridiculous.

But I can be very inconspicuous.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
(A) Anything by Christopher Moore (especially "Lamb: The gospel according to Biff" If you haven't read it, go do it now. I'll wait), Douglas Adams, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Steve Martin, "The Last Samurai" by Helen Dewitt (Has nothing to do with the movie. It's not even set in Japan. Go read this too), Dear Gangster, by The Gangster of Love, issues 13-25 of Blue Beetle, The Areas of my Expertise, by John Hodgman. And plays by Tom Stoppard, Christopher Durang, Shakespeare, Moliere, Mamet, and the absurdists (Ok, I really don't like reading absurdist plays. I love thinking about them though, so I do it anyway)

(B) Heathers, The Muppet Movie, Swingers, Shawshank Redemption, Dogma, Nightmare Before Christmas, American Beauty, The Fall, Iron Man, The Fisher King, The Dark Knight, Duck Soup, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Cyrano de Bergerac.

I'm not a big fan of the traditional romantic comedy, but I do like movies where two truly unusual people find each other (Me, You, and Everyone we know, Secretary, Eagle vs. Shark, Harold and Maude, etc.). It's more interesting than just watching 2 beautiful, successful people stumble around each other for 2 hours.

(C) I'm way behind on TV. I'm not home most nights so I can't keep up with most things, but I'll go on Netflix binges when I have the time. But my favorite shows are How I Met Your Mother, Louie, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Northern Exposure, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Coupling (the British Version), Deadliest Warrior, The first 15 minutes of the Daily Show and Colbert Report, Firefly, The Office, The Muppet Show, Boston Legal, and Leverage. I prefer shows you can enjoy one episode of without having to commit to an entire series.

(D) I have unusual taste in music. I haven’t liked any Radiohead album since “The Bends”, but I have everything the Mighty Mighty Bosstones have released. I listen to Billy Joel and Harry Chapin for the same reason people like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. My favorite live shows were The Flaming Lips, Gogol Bordello, Leonard Cohen, and They Might Be Giants. I clean my house to Flogging Molly or Reverend Horton Heat. My favorite bassist is Floyd Pepper. I like Man Man because it sounds like a polka band falling down an elevator shaft. I think Ben Folds is one of the most talented musicians of our generation. I don’t buy into the notion that your taste in music is the be all end all signal of your artistic taste, and I probably have more stand up albums in my car than music on any given day. I don’t care if you heard of them first, because music doesn’t have an expiration date. I sing 80’s and 90’s songs at karaoke.

(E) I'll try anything, but I'm fond of Thai, Indian, Italian, and good old American Bar food.
Six things I could never do without
I try not to have things I can't live without. But things I have about frequently include...

Coffee: I'm not a morning person.
My Cell Phone: It's a compulsion at this point, but I like having the ability to get people when I need them, and it keeps me from having to wear a watch.
A Kazoo: Because I hate doing the instrumentals with the whole "La-dum-dum-dumm" thing when I sing, and I can't play any other instrument.
A Computer: Because I can't yell loud enough to stay in touch with everyone.
A car: I like walking, I do, but I like it better when it's an option.
Sticky notes: It's the only way I can even pretend to organize things.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The paradoxical nature of prune juice, the cultural impact of the last five minutes, new ways to take something mundane and make it something amazing, and why, when people start a sentence with "I'm not lactose intolerant but...", they always end up saying something really anti-dairy.
On a typical Friday night I am
Spending time with friends, either at a movie, bar or some random event we've cooked up for the evening. If I'm hanging out at the house, I probably have a bunch of friends over for beer and board games. Or hopefully performing somewhere.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I don't hurt people. But I always know the best way to.

Sometimes I have a hard time explaining to people why I'm walking funny, because they don't know that the floor has turned to lava.

I'm also the only one on OKCupid with an interest in barbecued narcoleptic orcas
You should message me if
You're brilliant and the right kind of crazy. You should also be at least as strong as you pretend to be. I'm a challenge. You should be too.

You're local and looking for someone new to have coffee/beer (not together, that's gross. It's an either/or situation) with one night.

You own more books than you have time to read, and find that comforting.

I also need someone with a good sense of humor to go see stand-up with.

If you're not local, I may not get back to you, especially if you only say "hi". Intrigue me, ask me a question. Ask me for advice; I'm really good at giving advice. But don't just tell me I'm neat and then expect me to continually prove it to you. Work with me here.

Also, I'm taking an informal survey:

If you could have one drink with anyone you used to know (and to your knowledge still living), who would it be? You're only allowed the timespan of one drink, and after that you have to leave, not knowing any better than you did before how to get in touch with them.

Who is your favorite Marx Brother?

(I just moved back to Atlanta, and am getting settled, so if I liked you and didn't message you, don't take it personally. I'm trying to get things organized before actively pursuing any sort of relationship, and so I'm marking people to look at later. That being said, if you message me, I'll probably answer, because I enjoy conversation, and find women who are willing to take initiative sexy)
