My self-summary
50% Cuban + 50% Puerto Rican = 100% Awesomeness. It's all in the arithmetic.

I'm a pretty relaxed guy. Funny, witty, and with a good heart to boot! (Lies... all lies...)

I'm very passionate about my work: driven, ambitious, and always looking for the next thing. I keep productive without becoming a workaholic or losing touch with reality "on the ground." Hence, my play time is very important to me as well, whether it's out with friends at a bar, exploring the nooks and crannies of New York, or at home with a movie and a quiet dinner. All in all, there's always something to be had.

Tied to my work and life, I'm passionate about social justice (it's personal AND political, crazy I know). I'm Cuban on my mother's side and Puerto Rican on my father's, but since I was born and raised in Puerto Rico I identify mostly with the latter. Culture is very important to me. Though certainly not all that I am, without it all that I am is incomplete.

I enjoy making others laugh, laughing at myself, laughing at the world, etc. Laughter is good medicine--trust me, I'm a doctor--and I really like a person who can make me laugh too. :)
What I’m doing with my life
Just graduated with a doctorate in clinical psychology, with a focus on multicultural and community psychology. I bring a social justice perspective to my work, which flows from and informs different areas of my life. I'm also a writer in my field, and have been very successful as an author and academic.

Outside of shrinkland I'm a spoken word artist, an activist, and even somewhat of a social butterfly. I enjoy art, dancing, music, open mics, and at times a short film or two. I just like to see what's out there, meet new people, connect, and listen to their story.
I’m really good at
... listening to people without them feeling shrunk (shrinking is part of my trade, but that'll cost ya extra. I don't do freebies).
...defusing tense situations with humor.
...people-solving--it's problem-solving, but with people!
...learning my enemies' weaknesses.
...exploiting them.
...balancing the cute, the sensual, and the sublime. Sometimes hugs and cuddles are all a person needs. Sometimes (one hopes, often) the sensual is called for to cement one's intimacy and closeness with another person. But sometimes a person needs something more foundational, for someone to be there with them and for them--present and connected.
The first things people usually notice about me
My passion, creativity, and intensity. Also, my face. Apparently, my face is quite dexterous.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Writings for a Liberation Psychology, Everything is Illuminated, Wheel of Time series, Lord of the Rings series, Stephanie Plum series (and what of it?), The Puerto Rican Syndrome, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Fight Club, Rebel Nation, Outdated, How to be Black, Stuff White People Like, and etc. Some quirky detective stories, some fantasy, some culture, and a lot of brainy academic stuff thrown in.

Movies: Here it's a little broader, and perhaps contradictory. I'm a HUGE fan of horror movies, especially psychological horror (surprise?). I also enjoy a good action movie, especially if there's some brain behind the brawn. Independent films are a must (Humpday is a GEM of a film!). Also, The Seven Percent Solution = Sigmund Freud + Sherlock Holmes + Murderous Horses = Greatest Movie of All Time.

Shows: The Daily Show, Wire in the Blood (British shrink detective show from the BBC? Sold!), 30 Rock, Law & Order: SVU, Scrubs, Buffy, X-Files, How I Met Your Mother, Community, Archer, Luther, Parks and Recreation, and etc...

Music: Rock, Hip-Hop (regular and underground), Salsa, Merengue, Reggae, Reggaeton, Classical, Jazz, and etc.

Favorite Artists: Immortal Technique, Vico C, Domingo Quiñones, Eminem, Boys Like Girls, Frou Frou, Natalie Merchant, Twin Shadow, Rise Against, Calle 13, Disturbed, Linkin Park, and etc

Also love me some stand-up comedy: Russell Peters, Baron Vaughn, Elon James White, Baratunde Thurston, Louis C.K., W. Kamau Bell, George Lopez, Chris Rock, Hari Kondabolu, Hannibal Buress, and etc

Food & Drink: Love mostly everything, but definitely have a soft spot for Mediterranean, Thai, Indian, and Spanish food. In terms of drink, I tend to like red wines, good beers, and scotch. Matter of fact, have become a big fan of scotch as of late--Glenfiddich, Macallan--but I'm open to suggestions.

Podcasts, anyone? I'm a fan of Shrinkrap Radio ("All the psychology you need to know, and just enough to make you dangerous"), and Savage Lovecast ("Centaur Fetishists," 'nuff said). Also love This Week In Blackness Radio and The Field Negro Guide To Arts & Culture. 'Cause Puerto Ricans love black people. We tight.
Six things I could never do without
-Friends & Family
-Stimulating conversations
-My Ipod
-The music on my Ipod
-Podcasts (which I listen to on my Ipod)

Man. I really love my Ipod. And coffee. Big fan of coffee. Mmmmm... toasted almond...

Oh, sorry. You still here? Please, carry on...
I spend a lot of time thinking about
In general: theology, philosophy, psychology, how-many-licks-DOES-it-take-to-get-to-the-center-of-a-tootsie-roll-pop-ology, politics, art, culture, what is love.

More specifically: religion and society, phenomenology and "the Other," trauma and immigration, whether it's three or thirty-five, identity politics in a neoliberal political economy, theater and dance as numinous spaces, race and gender/sexuality, baby don't hurt me-- no more.
On a typical Friday night I am
It depends, really: going out with friends, dancing, hanging out, finding a venue for some good spoken word or stand-up comedy, plotting to take over the world.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I sometimes listen to songs repeatedly on my Ipod.

Current obsession: Ellie Goulding's "Lights." No fear. No shame.
