My self-summary
Raised in the Hudson Valley by old-left types, trained in academic nonsense in our nation's capitol. (I miss subways, even terrible, terrible WMATA that tends to have track fires.)

Introvert, but I have jokes.

Great parallel parker on the passenger's side, inexplicably horrible on the driver's side. Out of practice orchestra percussionist. Two people independent of each other said I had the personality of Josh from "West Wing." At least one of them meant it for a compliment.
What I’m doing with my life
Public policy, a.k.a. making New York the socialist hellscape I've always dreamed of.
I’m really good at
Telling stories; pop sociology; tambourine rolls; remembering dinosaur names; Times crossword; whistling (most people just find this annoying, but it says "I'm really good at" not "I'm really good at and people like.")
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Fiction: Snow, All Men are Mortal, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Handmaid's Tale (though Republicans trying to move this to "non-fiction"), The Plague, All the King's Men, Marat/Sade.

Non-fiction: The New Jim Crow, Nixonland, The Submerged State, Family Properties (pretty much any book that makes me want to throw it across the room is doing its job), The 30 Years War, The Orientalist, Battle Cry of Freedom. Barbara Tuchman was probably my soul mate.

TV & movies: Game of Thrones, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Casablanca like anyone who has a heart, Royal Tenenbaums, Twin Peaks.

Albums for a desert island:
-Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited
-Van Morrison, Astral Weeks
-Neko Case, Blacklisted
-Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony.
-Either a Joan Baez best-of or the Clancy Brothers Live from Carnegie Hall.

Lately alternating Florence & the Machine, Billy Bragg (three chords and the truth), and Velvet Underground.
The six things I could never do without
Websites that let you rip MP3s off Youtube; paper copies of books; post-it notes; winter; family; a job that feels meaningful.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Fascinated by the match questions on here. "In 'Wherefore art thou Romeo,' what does 'wherefore' mean?" You could marry someone for 60 years and never have this once come up. But on here it feels REALLY IMPORTANT to me that a stranger get it right. And honestly, you have google, there's no reason for anyone to get it wrong.
On a typical Friday night I am
"Going out or staying in" seems popular but it's kind of a garbage metaphysical answer isn't it?

Recently, building Legos with my baby nephews!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have no emotional walls and open up to people much too quickly. So, just ask and I'll probably admit it.
