My self-summary
Brainy, reserved, successful, down-to-Earth, well adjusted guy (he says humbly).
What I’m doing with my life
Well, I just moved to Istanbul. Other than that: I write for a living, am studying Russian and Turkish, trying to become a better photographer, have spent a lot of time in the ex-USSR and now trying to get to know Turkey.
I’m really good at
modesty? (or at least feigning modesty...)
The first things people usually notice about me
My height, probably. I've also been told I have "gravitas," for better or worse.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: All time favorite writers are Hemingway and Salinger. My favorite new writer is probably Gary Shteyngart. These days I mostly read nonfiction, alas. But on vacation recently on vacation I read a bunch of novels and it made me vow to read more novels (which has not happened at all, but after I get settled here...) I know that in Istanbul this marks me as utterly unremarkable, but I one of the novels I read on vacation was Snow and I thought it was fantastic.

Movies: Pretty much any Coen brothers, Charlie Kauffman. Lots of French/German movies I would get on Netflix and then forget the titles of.

Music: This is a big one for me. I've gone through phases of what used to be called "college rock" (REM, Pixies, etc.), goth/industrial (Skinny Puppy, Cocteau Twins, etc.), bands with long names and long songs (Do Make Say Think, Godspeed You Black Emperor). Semi-recent (i.e. last 10 years) favorites include Destroyer, Pinback, Radio Dept., to give you a flavor. Looking forward to exploring Turkish music.
On a typical Friday night I am
Well, after the move there is no such thing as typical, I guess.
You should message me if
You don't mind showing a clueless foreigner around (and if you are a foreigner, you don't mind that I'm more clueless than you).
