My self-summary
A sage once told me when in doubt to pare down to essentials... (Said in slick, speed-date style): "Hello, My name is Matt. I am a doctor (PhD, alas) with a heart of gold (cue Neil Young). I am invested in language, culture, and politics. Sexual/textual politics are currently my life. However, I like to think that in spite of my stated career path, I value humor, lightness, physicality, and play."

The upshot--I am curiouser and curiouser, and fun, like whoa.
What I’m doing with my life
I teach Victorian literature (think Dickens) and instruct under-eager undergraduates on the fine art of the thesis statement. Yes, I teach the world to write in perfect harmony.

I am still debating whether I might remain in the academic world, or pursue the whole law/business school thing, post-PhD. Better yet, I will just go bohemian, quit everything, and travel around the world. A self-indulgent memoir would most certainly have to emerge, with high hopes that it would be turned into a made-for-TV movie (starring James Franco as me).
I’m really good at
A laundry list of things that would have been more valuable in the preceding centuries. I would say I am a good writer and teacher (there is documented proof of this). I am also generally good at the parenthetical statement and trafficking in wit (and keeping pretension at bay). I like to think I am pretty dope in contexts where knowing useless factoids becomes critical.

More importantly, I strive to be a good friend and caring human: someone people in my life can depend on and trust. While my potentially wordy (my apologies) response would not suggest this, listening and empathy are important to me. I can provide trustworthy soundbites as needed.
The first things people usually notice about me
I hope my humor. Although I would not be utterly offended if someone corrected me by saying that the first things they noticed about me were my pitch-perfect sense of fashion and debonair good-looks. I aspire to be a modern-day dandy. In other words, I try to keep it classic with an assortment of suspenders and top hats. And quips about trivia.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
As any sensualist knows, variety is the spice of life...

I am a bit of a movie fanatic. I have seen a good many movies, from a variety of genres. Same for TV. Netflix is the ideal postmodern partner (at least according to the most informed blogs around). In The Realm of the Senses, anyone?

Along with film, I do enjoy me some food and music as well. I try to eat rather healthy, but like many national cuisines: Greek, Vietnamese, Korean, Indian, Japanese, American.

As for music, my taste is eclectic. I particularly like folk, punk, opera, and classical--I am equally inspired by mosh pits and concert halls. I also deeply enjoy hip hop. Fusion is my middle name.
Six things I could never do without
1) My family, friends, and comrades in the struggle
2) Humanism
3) (Cruel) Optimism
4) Mass culture
5) Humor
6) The Mystic
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Politics, pornography, poetry, and physical fitness.

And, cults of personality, for good measure.
On a typical Friday night I am
I am seeing some live music of some sort; at a bar with friends, epically carousing; going to the movie theater; theater; sporting events; finding interesting locales around the region; or staying in. Always too much to do and too little time to do it in.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Privacy is bourgeois.
You should message me if
You want to co-inspire some adventures. You have passion (ideally, expressed in a non-creepy fashion), and a tendency to question the state of things. Or you think I am fine, fit, funny, or any other f-affirmative word.
