My self-summary
"Never neglect the wonder of conscious existence, which too soon comes to an end.”
What I’m doing with my life
Living it one day at a time, with an eye on the long view and the main chance.
I’m really good at
Designing wittily deadpan (Buster Keaton-ish) CGI robots (more about that later). Not knowing when I'm beaten. Picking the perfect typeface (PMN Caecilia is my current favorite). Strategic and tactical snark. Shooting straight. Being there for my friends. Making twenty-three different kinds of pasta sauce and one kind of chronological mixtape. Identifying paintings at any museum without needing to look at the little cards (from twenty paces.

I doubt I was ever "really good" as a runner, but after a multi-year hiatus from being a serious runner, I'm trying to get back into it...currently doing about 25 miles a week, hopefully more as my aging legs get back into condition. I also do yoga as often as possible (although it tends to put my brain in a mellow haze where I can't focus on work afterward.)
The first things people usually notice about me
Hm, I've never thought to ask them. My cute butt? (very cute for forty-eight, I have to say)...my uncanny resemblance to a younger Gene Hackman?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Bookage: Pynchon, Borges, Penelope Fitzgerald, Graham Greene, Edith Wharton, Jack Vance. Et Al. (Good ol' Al. He's always readable)

I don't know exactly what category to put it in, but I have a great love for works with a certain mix of erudition and silliness-- e.g., Stephen Fry, "Schickele Mix," and the songs of Tom Lehrer. (I realize that every woman on OKCupid takes herself and the world very, very seriously--but possibly there are a few goofballs out there to whom a bit of dorky humor in a man is actually a selling point. One never knows.)

Films: "The Holy Mountain," "Go," "Spirit Of The Beehive," "Heavy Metal," "Repo Man." More recently: "Obvious Child," "Cheap Thrills," "Inside Out."

Music, popular: "Automatic For The People," "The Milk-Eyed Mender," "I See A Darkness," "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart." Sadness and whimsy, whistling past the graveyard.)

Music, unpopular: Beethoven's late chamber music, Glenn Gould's "Well-Tempered Clavier," any jazz recorded before 1930. And Schubert's C-Major Quintet, which I think is one of the greatest (and most underappreciated) works in the classical canon.

TV: Like everybody else, "The Wire," The Sopranos," "The Office," and the first season of "True Detective." I also like some recent BBC comedies--"The Trip," the various Mitchell & Webb projects, and the improv-quiz show "QI." I'm also enjoying "Silicon Valley." (if you've read this far, that's probably no surprise.)

Food: I like to cook and my friends seem to enjoy eating what I make. Possibly they're just being polite.
The six things I could never do without
Red wine. Espresso. Reality-based political blogs (Matt Taibbi, Balloon Juice, LG&M, Charlie Pierce, etc.). Drinking with my pet okapi during okapi hour. My cozy and book-filled apartment. Clean socks with no holes in them.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
"Give me back the Berlin Wall
Give me Stalin and St Paul
I've seen the future, brother--
It is murder.

Things are going to slide, slide in all directions
Won't be nothing--
Nothing you can measure anymore."

Also, why does it say "drag photos to reorder" in the photo section here when I don't *have* any photos of myself in drag?
On a typical Friday night I am
"Send lawyers, guns, and money--
Dad, get me out of this."

;)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
"I tried it just once, found it all right for kicks
But now I've found out it's a habit that sticks."
You should message me if
...you're a semi-serious runner who's up for a lap around Prospect Park. If you love to cook and want to explore some previously-untried recipes. If, career-wise, your need for creative freedom has sometimes trumped your desire for long-term stability. Or if you just want to get sushi. I'm *always* up for sushi.

Also, please have at least one *recent* full-length photo of yourself on your profile. (Yes, I realize this makes me seem like a superficial jerk. However, if you're not comfortable enough with your body to post a picture of it on a dating website, we probably wouldn't get along anyway.)
