My self-summary
Whitman described himself as untranslateable, containing multitudes, and like most people when they can't find words for themselves, I'll take his. Or hers: it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. Between Austen's socially bred and practical single man and whitman's hairy, outdoorsy rebel I feel I'm spoken for. Good fortune part's a bit laughable; untranslatable's a bit pretentious--but I won't deny being those things either. But i'm equal parts goof and gentleman, woodsman and workaholic, partier and philosopher, and getting to know me in the sea of contradiction i like to think is better than might be summarized. This site has given me a flow chart, but that doesn't quite cover the whole story, and the lists below try much harder than this to catalogue my life. I don't doubt that a thousand assumptions and expectations will vanish if we meet, or that they'll develop the more I keep writing, you keep reading. So I'm going to take the easy way out here and say I look forward to chatting.
What I’m doing with my life
On the daily grind side of things, I'm working hard to be the best high school English teacher I can be. I teach seniors, juniors, honor classes, so there's a lot of hours grading, reading, etc. 3rd year so things aren't quite as demanding, but that's my priority in life at the moment. Also coach girls soccer and golf, teach after school, generally be active faculty, and that's a good chunk of my life there, no denying.
But I deeply believe in having a life outside of work. I do most of that with sports: pick up basketball, rock climbing, yoga, golf, weightlifting, anything I can. Guaranteed to be doing one or two of these things 5 to 6 days of the week. Mostly what I would spend in a relationship I spend doing dude stuff, something I recognize as compensatory but that I really love. I also love reading, guitar by myself. But I'm still young so I love getting loose some nights, going to a show, great bar or dance floor, some Artbeat stuff, the odd festival in town or on the outskirts. Definitely a fun loving guy looking for someone who has simple pleasures and deep and varied capacity for enjoyment.
That's job/hobbie front. Then there's this whole living life to the fullest thing on the spiritual side. Trying to be good to others, to myself, better with family. Doing and becoming good is the long and the short of it. Results vary from day to day.
I’m really good at
Working with kids, conversation, writing, talking about feelings, sports (except baseball), making others laugh, but, mostly, I know I'm only really good at my job, teaching. Everything else is vanity, but I got my job on lock (won Teacher of the Year in my 2nd year, so I'm allowing myself some objectively-based boasting).
The first things people usually notice about me
That I look like Shaun white. Then, that I have a deep voice.

The six things I could never do without
My sister
My memories
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to attain fleeting happiness. Higher purposes and deeper meanings. The taste of my last great meal. Haunting images from powerful books/poetry. How to make love stay.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either at a great live show, reading a book, or coaching my girls soccer team (or at another school based sporting event)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I've never actually finished any of the 'novels' I may claim to have written.
You should message me if
You're interested in a not-exactly-typical guy who will be as respectable and fun as possible while trying to show you a good time. And if you have a thing for red and/or long hair. But really I want some responses so the first one.
