My self-summary
I'm Ian. I just graduated from UMass with a double major in English and German. These days, I'm preparing to leave to teach English in Thailand in October.
I think music, cooking, and languages are tons of fun. I play bass and ukulele pretty well and have been known to pick out a tune on a guitar or banjo from time to time too. I can speak German pretty well and have been studying Vietnamese to talk with some people I used to work with. I'll cook just about anything, and usually it will come out somewhere between okay and amazing.
I live for new experiences and try to say yes as much as I can.
What I’m doing with my life
Hanging out in the Valley while I try to figure out what's next. In the meantime, I can usually be found reading, cooking, playing some music, and taking yoga classes in Bikram's torture chamber.
I’m really good at
Cooking and jamming out on the bass and ukulele are the first things that come to mind. I've been known to brew a pretty nice beer every once in a while. And according to one of my yoga teachers, my triangle pose is "kick-ass"
The first things people usually notice about me
I get a lot of compliments on my eyes. People seem to like it when I smile too, so I make sure to do a whole lot of that.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Have you ever read Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo? I like books like that. I also go for nonfiction books about people finding their way through the world, like A Time of Gifts, by Patrick Leigh Fermor.

I very rarely watch movies. A few favorites that come to mind are The Jerk and Step Brothers. I just watched Moonrise Kingdom last week, and thought it was just wonderful.

Sometimes I feel like I watch too much TV. Other times I feel like I don't watch enough TV. Either way, I don't think I'm watching the right shows. Unless it's right to watch copious amounts of South Park and Scrubs reruns.

A short list of artists I've been especially enjoying lately would have to include Blind Pilot, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, Polica, Real Estate, Woods, The Speed of Sound in Seawater, Hostage Calm and Delicate Steve. I have a real soft spot for Ke$ha too, and don’t feel bad about it at all.

There isn’t much food I can’t get into. When I go out, I think Vietnamese and Thai food are the way to go. When I cook for myself, I read a bunch of recipes for certain dishes then try to figure it out and make it my own. I’m usually pretty successful. And you should probably know that I make a mean cranberry sauce.
Six things I could never do without
Tasty food, live music, interesting books, good beer, fun people, and lots of new experiences.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I try to see myself more as a doer than a thinker. Then I just end up spending tons of time thinking about what to do. It's a vicious cycle.
On a typical Friday night I am
Out and about, usually in Amherst or Northampton. Sometimes taking it easy with some friends, other times seeing some bands somewhere or just out for a drink. I try to keep things interesting.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I used to long to go to Russia because I thought Saint Basil's Cathedral looked like it was made of ice cream. Now I don't really think that, but I'd still like to make it to Moscow someday.
