My self-summary
I'm an academic and an artist who does both because of a deep love for humanity. I can be a bit of a crusader, and am prone to tilting at windmills from time to time.

I enjoy cooking for my friends, listening to jazz, singing and playing the piano, amassing useless antiquated trivia, going out dancing and cocktailing*, reading, attending ballets and symphonies, fine dining, and the kind of discussions that last until the middle of the night.

*The embedded editor doesn't believe that is a real word. I disagree. Perhaps after it has been cocktailing for a while it will see the light. The warm, fuzzy, slightly-blurred-around-the-edges light.
What I’m doing with my life
When not buried under piles of books or shackled to a desk in the library, I do occasional semi-professional work as a vocalist, and indulge the moral hedonism and unfettered geekiness of my soul.
I’m really good at
I'm the social coordinator of my friends, and I host a great many parties and dinner parties. I love to cook for my friends, getting them together to share and commune with each other.

I've been playing piano since I was four years old, and have played nearly every brass instrument since then. My main instrument, though, is the voice. I'm a classically trained baritone, and a semi-professional vocalist.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
A) My favorite book as a child was There's a Monster at the End of this Book. Grover is all kinds of goodness. Since then, there have been piles and piles of books. But, I guess the largest piles all have some sort of religious or mythological slant to them. My favorite non-fiction books are theological texts of various religions, and my favorite fiction tends to be fantasy/sci-fi.

B) My favorite movie when I was 5, and my favorite movie now, is The Dark Crystal. Other than that, anything that is epic and/or imaginative is great. If it takes 4 hours to watch, I'll probably like it (e.g. Cleopatra, LotR movies, et cetera). I'm also a huge fan of various genres of Foreign cinema: French fantasies (City of Lost Children, Amelie), Chinese epics (The Emperor and the Assassin, Hero), any of the Kurosawa films, and a great many anime movies.

C) Being a musician, it's hard for me to dismiss any type of music. However, it is a very rare day when you'll catch me listening to Country or some of the more vapid Ultra-Pop. I'm primarily interested in Classical and Jazz, with Rock being a common mainstay. Since I love to go dancing, Latin, Techno, and anything else that has a good beat is always fun.

D) Cooking is a bit of a hobby of mine. I host dinner parties on a regular basis. And, so, my tastes are many and varied. Generally speaking, I prefer to push the boundaries: trying new cuisines, new foods, and new expressions of old standards.
Six things I could never do without
You know... Maslow's Pyramid, with sprinkles on top.
On a typical Friday night I am
Questing for the perfect martini.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
N.B.: This category asks for the "most private thing," not "an intensely private thing that you feel uncomfortable mentioning." Therefore, there really is little need for all of the angst found in most responses to this.
The "most private" is of broad scope and highly dependent on the individual- from announcing your heretofore secret disdain for plaid fabrics to displaying photos of your recent colonoscopy.

(For the record, I am generally in favor of tartans, yet typically dislike madras, and have impeccable gastro-intestinal health.)
You should message me if
I love meeting all manner of different people. Bring it on.
