My self-summary
A British physicist, resolutely claiming that I'm also European, I've moved from the UK to Germany (via 18 months in Japan) for research.
What I’m doing with my life
I use very powerful lasers in very expnsive laboratories to find out how matter behaves inside planets and stars. And I love it :D
When not sitting in darkened rooms playing with lasers or computers, I go running, rowing and have even been known to salsa dance, but am most often found reading or in a pub.
I’m really good at
I've been told that I'm a good listener, but I prefer to be the one cracking jokes and making people smile. Also got some pretty strong trivia knowledge under this floppy head of hair
The first things people usually notice about me
My accent, whether posh British or awfully-pronounced German
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Too many things... here's a few:
Dune, Infinite Jest, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, The Ethical Slut
Despicable Me (1 & 2), Airplane!, Serenity
Firefly, Archer, House of Cards
Cheesy radio stations, jazz or occasionally swing/salsa for dancing
Six things I could never do without
I don't think I can stretch it to a list of six things, but a bottle of scotch, a good book (or a few) to read and a Netflix subscription would probably keep me going for quite a while.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
...why things are the way they are. This ranges over etymology, history, physics; I tend to end up reading all about a subject and anything related to it on wikipedia for quite a while - not great for work, but my pub quiz skills are pretty finely honed. people on here can choose an answer but then say it's unacceptable in other people!
You should message me if
you want to meet up - I like exchanging messages but I much prefer chatting over coffee or beer
