My self-summary
Serious about the big questions of life (Why am I here? What's the right balance between work, service and play? How do a set a good example for my teenage son?), but, at the same time, don't take things too seriously. Life is filled with opportunities for laughter. Detest pomposity, arrogance and self-importance. Known for my wit and generally (although not always) appreciated for it.

Intellectually curious and like learning new things, whether or not they have any intrinsic or practical value. Big fan of NPR and TedTalks. Avid reader of The New Yorker (usually simultaneously midway through several issues). Play guitar often and passably well, listen to a broad range of music (especially obscure singer-songwriters), and enjoy movies (particularly classic old ones).

Prefer comfort to status. Thai food beats a meal at a fancy French restaurant (although a fancy meal now and then has its place too). Happiest in old jeans and a sweatshirt.
What I’m doing with my life
Struggling to find the right balance, but still too busy with work (which I generally and genuinely enjoy). Raising an always wonderful, but sometimes challenging (aren't they all) teenage son. Serial not-for-profit board member and volunteer (currently on the boards of an international development organization and a spiritual retreat center).
I’m really good at
Finding and synthesizing information. Problem solving. Explaining things. Writing. Staying focused when necessary. Maintaining long term friendships. Crafting a persuasive argument (I'm getting better at learning when using this skill is inappropriate). Keeping perspective. Cheese making (a somewhat recently acquired pursuit with mixed results to date -- although everyone has survived the tastings). Laughing
The first things people usually notice about me
My sense of humor. My lack of sense of style/fashion. My wide-ranging interests. My willingness to engage in lively discussion, debate and exploration.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Anything by John McPhee or John Sayles. Recently read "Just Kids" by Patti Smith, which I thought was one of the best books I've read in a very long time. Getting through The New Yorker seems to exhaust much of my reading time.

Food: Anything Asian. Barbecue. Cheese.

Shows: The Wire. Arrested Development. The Daily Show (as long as I don't watch it too often).

Movies: Anything directed by John Sayles. Almost anything directed by Woody Allen. The Marx Brothers. Reds. Godfather Part II. The Grapes of Wrath. Singin' in the Rain. The Graduate. The Shawshank Redemption. The Apartment. Groundhog Day.
The six things I could never do without
My son, NPR, Wikipedia, laughter, music, opportunities to grow/learn/evolve
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How can I be a good/better dad? Given my good fortune, what are my extra responsibilities? How can I best live a life of value and meaning? If I sleep a little longer, will I still be able to get to the office on time?
On a typical Friday night I am
recovering from the work week and/or driving to my house upstate and/or having dinner with my son and/or out with a friend (maybe a longstanding one or maybe someone new).
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My private side not always completely consistent with my public side.
You should message me if
you are someone who is: curious; playful; adventurous (perhaps even adventuresome); warm; engaged in/with the world (but also like to retreat from it occasionally); optimistic; caring; open; imperfect (but still working to improve); wide-ranging in your taste in music, film, books and food; intellectual; interested in pushing yourself in new directions, and to learn, grow, and evolve; aware that humans are both spiritual and physical beings (and enjoy both aspects) . . . and you are seeking to find and spend some time (as little as a chat over coffee or a beer, or as long as a lifetime) with someone who is similarly-minded.
