Though some of you might wonder, I am very comfortably black and proud of it. I am not from an island, no one in my immediate or not so immediate family is from another country and I am not the product of an interracial union. I am African- American, born in the Midwest – just an example of the diversity of the black experience here in the US. So, what does this mean? I am multi-faceted. What I am not, however, is like any of the black women that folks who watch TV these days are quick to grab onto as representative of the black female experience. I will never be a Real Housewife, Basketball Wife or on Love & Hip Hop, nor do I want to be. Whatever assumptions you make about me based on how I look, probably only get you to, at most, half of the story.
For me, it is all about the yin and the yang. I am a renaissance woman who also is fascinated by the latest technology. A tomboy who also likes to have to door held open for her. I am empathetic but not enabling. I like romantic comedies and suspense, action and sci-fi. I feel just as comfortable with a needle and thread or a paintbrush as with power tools or a tablet computer. I can be hard and tough or soft and mushy. I can take care of myself but that doesn’t mean I want to have to all the time. I have a professional career but I love to cook. It is one of my creative outlets and I think I am pretty good at it. I love coming up with my own original recipes, borrowing from recipes I find to make something even better! I love to travel, both domestically and internationally, although I don’t get to do it quite as much as I would like. But when I do travel, I like to really get to know the place I am going so I am not all that big on cruises or all-inclusive resorts. There is a time and place for those things but that time is when I care more about spending time with the person I am with than where I am going. And while there is such a thing as black and white, I understand that most of life exists in the grays – all the varying shades. But I am still very clear about what will and will not work for me.
I am looking for someone to share experiences and have adventures with. Someone who is intellectually curious and open-minded and likes to learn and try new things. Someone who has some hustle, who is not interested in staying still, but moving with purpose and determination toward their goals. Someone who is open-minded and adventurous. Someone who enjoys life and likes to laugh, and is not afraid to laugh at themselves. Someone who is not content just sitting on the couch all the time but wants to get out and see the world and get things done. Someone who thinks their health is important and has some dedication to their own physical fitness. Someone who is not scared to eat something raw, or taste something they have never tried before. Someone who is secure enough and articulate enough to express their feelings. Someone with a passport, who has used it to or has a strong interest in using it to travel to someplace other than Canada and Mexico and who can travel legally to those places with no issue. (Those on the “No Fly” list, should not apply! :-)
Oh, and I am 5'9" and I wear heels often. I prefer not to tower over someone I am dating but the most important thing is that he not have a problem with it.
I am an excellent cook.
I think I am a good dancer.
I make a good travel partner.

Music: Varies quite a bit. Good music makes my soul happy. I am an East Coast rap/hip hop fan but I also like music of many other genres (although country is not that high on my list) -- Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, Talib Kweli, Common, Lupe Fiasco, J. Cole, Little Brother, Outkast, Pitbull, Jamiroquai, Foreign Exchange, Adele, Neyo, Maxwell, Bebel Gilberto, Sade, Prince, Maroon 5, St. Germain, Gotan Project, Roisin Murphy, Florence + the Machine, Fiona Apple, Jason Mraz, Gym Class Heroes, Reggae, Soca, assorted deep house DJs like Mark Farina, to name a few.
Food: Oh well...... I am a food enthusiast! I like to try new things, I like to cook new things and I also like some old standbys, as long as they are good! I love sushi but can likely find something I like in any kind of cuisine. I do love all things dairy -- ice cream, cheese, milk, cheesecake, etc --- and love grilling, smoking and BBQ (real BBQ, not hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill!)
Ice cream & chocolate
My self esteem
(not in that order, at least not most of the time!)
I have been known to dance around my bedroom/house.
