My self-summary
I’m earnest and intellectually curious, but also able to make stupid jokes and see the absurdities of life. I read and think a lot, yet I’m also a dancer and soccer player. In much of what I do I’m controlled, yet at the same time capable of great energy and joy (sort of like Bach, as opposed to jazz...). I value my friends highly, and once I feel I have a close friend, I am loyal and attentive and want to stay in touch. The arts are important to me, and so is awareness of what’s going on in the world. But one can’t be serious all the time... joking around is important!

Please note: I'm not very outdoorsy; if your main thing is hiking, camping, and canoeing, I may not be the right person. Also, I am not on A-list. If you have enough interest to "like", please send me a message.

I am intelligent, kind, and energetic
What I’m doing with my life
Learning and teaching, trying to understand myself, enjoying the arts, dancing.
I’m really good at
Languages, conversation, contra dancing, wry humor, organizing space (I’ve often packed the truck for friends’ moves).
The first things people usually notice about me
That I like to talk and exchange ideas, to find out who people are and how they think
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Lots! -- far too many to mention. Fiction (Henning Mankell, Octavia Butler, Sarah Dunant, Richard Russo, Mary Doria Russell); nonfiction (The Inner Bird, Righteous Mind); independent and otherwise good film (Red [the Kieslowski film], The Secret in Their Eyes, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Inception, Run Lola Run); classical/jazz/rock/Celtic fiddling; burgers or steaks, sushi or gan-chao-niu-he...
The six things I could never do without
friendship, intellectual curiosity, visual beauty, self-awareness, a sense of humor
I spend a lot of time thinking about
my friends, how my mind works, how languages work, good books or films, ways we could make the world better
On a typical Friday night I am
dancing, out for dinner, and/or watching a movie
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
inside of me is an exuberant little boy trying to get out
You should message me if
you like stimulating conversation, are intellectually curious, and have both a sense of purpose and a sense of humor
