My self-summary
Hey there! I like reading, hiking, rafting, and driving. I'm a huge history nerd, and try to keep up with foreign affairs. I think deeds speak louder than words unless you're an excellent orator. On that note, my favorite presidents are probably FDR, Lincoln, and Jefferson, as flawed as they are. Oh, and I firmly believe people should have a broad skill set. Sure, I might be a huge academic-type nerd/English teacher, but I'm a huge academic-type nerd/English teacher who can SCUBA dive, perform light search and rescue, and fight forest fires.
What I’m doing with my life
Heading to law school in the fall. Trying to heal up through the VA. Farting around, learning things in more depth, meeting new and interesting people. Debating whether to go further in teaching, a more active public service career, or a more politicalish profession.
I’m really good at
I'm good at carrying heavy loads, random trivia, increasing ambient absurdity, building scaled replicas of planes, predicting future behavior based on past activities, and camping/outdoor stuff.
The first things people usually notice about me
My height, my eyes, my sense of humor, and sooner or later, my absurdly good luck when it comes to having bad luck (getting injured, but only millimeters away from a serious injury, developing minor superpowers after incidents with lasers, that sort of thing).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Hmm. Books? "1491", LOTR trilogy, stuff by R.A. Salvatore, Horatio Hornblower series by Forester, instructional manuals with randomly useful information (welding? Yes, please!). If you haven't read the Flashman series, do so. He is a thoroughly reprehensible and utterly captivating character. I've recently been able to catch up on some books I've had piling up, so I now know quite a bit more about the OSS than I did a few months ago. Terry Pratchett is the rightful king of the English language. If you like blending sci-Fi and fantasy, check out Charles Stross's The Laundry Files
Movies, Movies, Movies. "The Green Hornet, "Inglourious Basterds", "The Hurt Locker", "Star Trek" are some of the more recent movies I've enjoyed, but my favorites would have to be things like "The Godfather", "Unforgiven", Sergio Leone's Trilogy, "Pulp Fiction", "Platoon", "Apocalypse Now", "The Maltese Falcon" and about half the other films Humphrey Bogart was in.
I've got pretty wide musical tastes, from Hayes Carll to The Pogues to Killer Mike/Run The Jewels to Cake to The Fratellis to Bob Dylan to The Rolling Stones to Modest Mouse, Bo Diddly and Garbage. It kinda jumps around a bit. Last folks I saw in concert were Gogol Bordello, with Man Man opening.
Food? Mexican, Indian, American, Eastern or Western European food, and Native American food (jerky, piki bread, barbecue)
Six things I could never do without
I've found I can do without a whole bunch of stuff. I'd say that I get the most use out of my literacy, my body, six hours of sleep, my smartphone, and internet access.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My role in the world, my country's role in the world, ethics, whether it is best to be morally correct and perish or survive and compromise one's beliefs, the best ways to both thrive and hold to one's ethics, what it would take for the world to disarm, what the odds would be of an alien attack wiping our planet out because we haven't invested enough money in giant explodey lasers, what can be done to encourage more renewable energy sources, the best way to maintain our earth, the kind of people who get through this wall of text to read this line of text right here without losing interest, etc.
On a typical Friday night I am
Y'know, I'm no longer sure what a typical Friday night is, but I don't make any effort to make it more interesting or more boring than any other night in my life. Maybe it's just reading, maybe it's heading to the range, maybe it's packing for some excursion, maybe it's spent with an interesting person, maybe it's wasting a few hours playing some video game.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
It is entirely possible that I am addicted to sweet potatoes.
You should message me if
I strike your interest, and you'd like to get to know me better. Oh, and if we both are on at the same time, feel free to use the IM function. It's both handy and dandy in that oh-so-flattering black!

In general, I am interested in intelligent, warm, sex-positive women with a sense of humor. If you have a hunch that most of those adjectives/descriptions applies to you, I'd probably enjoy chatting with you. For more than chatting, I'm basically looking for "smart, friendly, and up for having sex without expecting more than good friendship". I'm possibly moving around a lot soon, so I'm aiming for short-term and casual. Essentially, friends to have sex with.

Oh, I've noticed a strong correlation between "people I enjoy hanging out with" and "people who listen to Garbage". I would like to do further research on this front.
